:frustrated::frustrated::frustrated::frustrated::frustrated: <--- Me trying to figure out what to do about a new mattress.

My husband and I desperately need a new mattress. I am embarrassed to tell you how old our mattress is. :paperbag: We have put this off for years because we have been debating upgrading to a king-sized from a queen-sized. Our bedroom is large, but due to window placement there is really only one place to put the bed. We would not be able to do it with our current nightstands. We would have to get much smaller (width-wise) nightstands.

We currently have one of the old coil spring mattresses and we bought a foam topper for it maybe a year and a half ago. I know it is close to impossible to get a coil mattress these days and I would rather not order online without trying it out.

What type of mattress do you have? Do you like it? Pros and cons? I wouldn't want anything that would be too warm in the summer as I have heard some retain the heat.

A relatively old one in one of the bedrooms, --with a seperate foam topper on it that I frankly think is more comfortable than anything LOL, and I've had other people say the same thing, on the line of "that's the most comfortable thing EVER" :)

I know this probably doesn't help for your purposes, but when we looked 5 or 7 years ago I wasn't much impressed. I think we ended up with a Doctors Choice. Maybe they've gotten better since?

If you can, I think I'd try and get a king.

I have recently decided to buy a new bed and found there are so many new types including one that throws back the heat from your body. However, as I had an orthopedic bed that I find really comfortable I bought a super orthopedic one. Big mistake for me. It is so hard, no give at all and it felt like I am sleeping on a board. My old bed is back in place and the new one is in the spare bedroom. All three cats love it so its not a complete waste.
Its down to what type of bed you like, hard , soft etc but I have heared that the memory foam ones are really comfortable.

We just bought a new coil-spring mattress recently. We are fortunate in that there is a local company that actually manufactures them to your order, from soft to extra-firm, and whatever size to fit your existing bed frame, if you want to keep it. It took them less than a week from the time we ordered it to delivery.

I need a new bed as well. I am unimpressed with memory foam. It seems to lose its memory too easily.

The one I'm currently looking at is a hybrid between coils and latex foam.

I have no idea when I can pull the trigger though. I could have bought a number of those for what I spent on Krista's vet bill this year. And the dumb "tax cut" has left me with a tax bill this year. :(

I bought a new coil spring mattress a few years ago. It is a regional chain that has factories in each state that they are in including one locally. I got their plush orthopedic one.

I had a memory foam topper on my old mattress to get a little more time out of it before buying new. I never did get used to the feel of the memory foam. I think it is just a personal preference thing but that made me decide not to go with memory foam.

You're not alone with your mattress situation.I think there's many of us that put it off as it is such an expense. We had a king coil spring mattress that was probably 10 years old,and it needed to go.I finally gave up and went to Sears. They were having a sale this summer.I knew I didn't want a pillow top and I wasn't interested in a bed in a box,so we bought a serta, king sized, new box springs, too, and have been very happy with it.It wasn't cheap, but for us it was worth it.

Do you have access to Consumer Reports? They did an update on mattresses in December. I don’t subscribe, but I can access it online for free through my public library.

I have slept on a waterbed for 30+ years now. They last a long time. In the winter, I turn up the heater, and it is so nice to get into a warm bed! In the summer, I turn the heat down and it cools me down. The cats can take a while to get used to it, but once they do, they love it. I know waterbeds are not for everyone. Sometimes people's backs don't like them, but they are great for my back!

Yikes, mattresses. I have some back issues and arthritis and so need a supportive bed that is still soft enough that it doesn’t make my hips ache. I bought a new adjustable bed a couple of years ago and have bought three, yes, three mattresses for it.

The first I bought at the bed store when I bought the bed. It was wonderfully comfortable there and for the first two months I had it. Then it just kept getting softer and softer until I felt like I was sleeping in a hammock. Another month, my back was killing me and I just had to get a different mattress. I found a $500 mattress which is at the bottom end of store mattress prices and this one supported my back but killed my hips. I added a latex foam topper which helped some but in the year I had it it just never got more comfortable and this as fall I was desperate enough to take a radical step.

I bought a Linenspa Latex Hybrid bed in a box mattress, cost something like $238 on Amazon, and it is the most amazingly comfortable mattress. It has coils with latex on top. Most mattresses today have memory foam, which I don’t care for because you sink into it and it doesn’t bounce back as quickly as latex does. With latex you sleep more on top of the padding. Even after six months this inexpensive mattress still feels supportive with a nice thick pad in top. No sore back or hips. The mattress came in a big box and is compressed flat. You lay it out, cut the plastic and it poofs out to its full thickness.

Uhh. We just bought a hybrid today and crossing fingers that we like it.
It felt great in the store but mattress shopping is really hard. We looked all over.
So expensive also when you don't even know if you really like it yet.
It will not be delivered for a couple weeks still.
Everyone is different. My husbamd can sleep anywhere, not me though.

My plan with the $238 hybrid coil/latex mattress that I brought online was that since it was only 10 inches thick I could add latex toppers to it if need be if it wasn’t comfortable and still be paying way less than store latex hybrids. Didn’t end up needing to do that though.

I bought a mattress from Sears online and just guessed on what I thought would be comfortable and thankfully it worked out well. I just checked the brand and it is a Sealy. I've had it two years now. The mattress before this one lasted about a year before it basically fell apart and sagged terribly. I got that one from Mattress Firm and I will never go back there.

We bought a ComforPedic (Memory foam; Simmons/BeautyRest brand I believe) when I was pregnant with DS. I prefer soft and DH prefers some firmness; so it was a good compromise. We have laid on a lot of beds buying for ourselves and our kids. I can't imagine NOT testing. Most of the time I love our bed. Getting a king is WORTH it! When we visit my family we get to share a full size bed and it's SO hard to roll over! Not to mention I've gotten used to not feeling motion when DH moves. Our kids have traditional coil mattresses and just sitting on their beds gives me a little "woah" sensation if I forget to expect movement.

I don't really have a problem with the heat in our bed. We do have central air though. I have an extra blanket on my side of the bed at the moment too. One thing to consider is buying a very good mattress protector because memory foam cannot get wet. I didn't know our protector had disintegrated till after a little coffee incident. The foam definitely lost some integrity where the coffee got through. (Note: do not try to wake someone by waving fresh brewed coffee under their nose! I rolled and wore it. Talk about a rude awaking!)

Sometimes I do wake up a little stiff or sore but most of the time our bed is great. But it does make me wonder what is the best choice if someone has back or joint issues. I don't know how long they are supposed to last; but our bed is just about 7 years old now and I finally got a new mattress protector on it. When I took the old one off I realized that I can see where DH and I each lay at night. The center of the bed is a bit higher too. But overall I think we would have seen sagging much faster with a traditional mattress and the bed is still comfortable to me. That also might be because we chose one with a bit softer of a "cloud layer" the sales guy called it. The Tempupedic ones felt way too hard to me.

We have a Tufts and Needle. I was iffy about the idea of buying a mattress in a box that we couldn't test ahead of time, but I haven't had any problems with it. It's less than a year old, so I can't speak to its longevity, though.

One thing I should have mentioned is that we got a flippable mattress, which helps extend the usable life span
~ Yes - a very good point. I am shopping for one myself.
Sterns & Foster used to make quality reversible mattresses - but no longer. ( I have an old one that's still alive :cloud9: ) They are the best and last the longest if made correctly with good materials. Don't know if Sealy or Serta make them ?
