Some nights she doesn't really care and only bothers to scratch at the walls a bit and then falls asleep. But most of the times it's a struggle to get her to shut up/do something else after 12 AM. I play with her during the day or at night. I cuddle with her and give her tons of attention. But she just hates seeing a door closed. Also, something else that might be related to this... she can't stand being alone. She wants me to be with her all the time and I can see she gets very sad when I leave. She usually likes my parents as well (I'm 18 still at home still in high school), but my mom often gets on her nerves. Even so, when they're sleeping (and they close the door every single time) she wants to see that damn door open. They're getting very frustrated with her waking them up at night with her non stop meowing and trilling. She doesn't stop if we ignore her. Her meows just get sadder and sadder lol.

So she doesn't lack anything (or at least anything obvious??), get the attention she needs when we're awake... but has an obsession with opened doors and needs somebody constantly by her side. She's an only child lol. h e l p

Hi!
How old is she?

Can you try really low volume music? There's classical harp music, an app called Relax My Cats, and MusicForCats . com as a couple of resources.

Have you looked into any over-the-counter calming products? Some ingredients include chamomile or valerian.

Can you obtain a ticking clock or a heartbeat toy? Even if she's older, this might help her.

Can you try something here?

Any chance you can adopt a cat friend for her? That way they will keep each other company and she will never be alone.

Hello! Thank you! She's 1 year old. I will look for any calming products at my local pet shop and I think the ticking clock is a great idea. I can probably find a smaller one around here, but no chance to find a heartbeat toy.

I'm not sure if she'd enjoy music. Whenever I play her any kind of music, she just kinda stares at me and trots away. I will check out your links.

What do you think of her "door obsession"? What might cause that? Also, do you think that maybe a mate could help her? Like a kitten or another similarly aged cat.

I can do that in a few months when I am on my own for university. Not now though. But I certainly want to get her a friend.

She is spayed if that's relevant.
Usually it is, yes, as a cat who is not neutered/spayed is more rowdy and less chill.

How old is she? We had a similar post recently where someone was freaking out that their kitten was acting like a toddler... well they are basically a toddler. What were they expecting? Kittens are going to have enourmous amounts of energy like little children.

Edit: I see she is 1... that explains everything.

I think a closed door means she can't come in and snuggle for sleep, which she might have done when she was a little baby :) the ticking clock hopefully helps with this, along with maybe a heated or thermal bed, --where the material is warmed by the cat's body?

Thank you all! I realize she's still a little baby and needs affection, but more often than not she enters the room and proceeds to scratch/run into things to wake my parents up. She doesn't really do this to me, maybe because my door is always open. But I will try all of your suggestions!

Our cat Gohan wants to open all the closets at night. We rent and can’t fox that the doors are all funky and won’t latch properly so he paws them open. We just leave them open and he’s quiet about it. He is, however, 7 years old and the doors aren’t closed to keep him out so we can do that.

As for your parents bedroom door I don’t have a lot of ideas. There was a My cat Faron Hell episode where the bedroom was off limits and he recommended a Skaat compressed air canister that would keep the cat away from the door. I’m not sure how good a solution that is, though.

Would your parents be willing to use a door stop - and leave the door open just enough that the cat can see she could go in if she wanted to? Or, do they not want her in their room?

I'm back lol.

So far I've tried the clock thing and I tried ignoring her completely when she does that. She is not budging. Last night I locked her in my room and she ultimately fell asleep with me. To be fair, they closed the door as soon as they heard her scratch at the walls, so maybe they should've ignored her. Had I left her wandering the house, she would've gone straight back to my parents' bedroom to terrorize them lol . So the problem is not her sleeping there, but her scratching and meowing at night when they try to sleep (after 12-1 AM). They don't like that, they kick her out of the room and close the door, she hates seeing the door closed and she starts doing the same thing all over again. My parents are also stubborn and don't want to "deal" with her meowing at all. She sometimes tries to get my attention and trills at me, but I just tell her to let me sleep and I ignore her aaaand she stops (sometimes I need to cuddle her). So idk? Tips for fixing my parents lol
I plan to get her up to date with her vaccines and then I'll try walking her on a leash or if she doesn't like that I'll let her hop in a bag of some sort and I'll at least show her some of the outside world. I think maybe that'll stimulate her mind more. But until then I have no idea. Tomorrow I will go look for those calming pills, maybe that'll be work.
Oh ya and she doesn't care about music (in the sense that it doesn't affect her behavior).

Maybe, this will ultimately work for her, and she will learn to sleep when you do!! Hope so! :crossfingers:

Lol- sorry, got nothing for you there!!

There are a bunch of calming products on the market - not all work for all cats, so there may be some experimenting you might have to do. But, one you could try is Back Rescue Remedy, they are drops you can rub into a cat's ear. A lot of people use these drops to calm a cat down before a vet visit.

Well, I don't suppose your parents would be interested in you buying/building a catio in your backyard? It is an enclosure that would let her be/see outside, but not able to roam outside the confines of the catio.

My first thought was lock her in your room with you .... and make sure you take her with you when you go to college! She will bug you but evtually learn it accomplishes nothing (just ignore her.) I have a kitten that I ignore until morning no matter what he does, and he is learning slowly to not bug me at night.

I'm back. We live in an apartment and either way we wouldn't afford a catio. No real improvements. I got her vaccinated today her first shot as my parents kept opposing it. I roughly 3 weeks I'll be able to train her to walk outside safely because she needs to get her 2nd shot in like 2 weeks.
Maybe I'm going into helicopter mom mode, but I'm getting a bit worried as she's refusing to let me touch her chest and meows weirdly

Your parents didn't want her to get her shot?

So, did something happen in the carrier or at the vet's that her chest got hurt?

Clicked reply a little too quickly. I also wanted to say that she's never done that before. I'm not sure if it's worth making another post. Just throwing it out there. I'm going tomorrow back to the vet just in case. I hope she's just being fussy because I "betrayed" her for getting her to the vet.
