This is quite long but I was wondering if anyone has had any similar experience, because I'm worried.

So we had our cat spayed over a year ago. A few months after the operation, we noticed a hole on her tummy with some pus coming out of it. We brought her back to the vet who did the surgery, and the vet prescribed some cream. Didnt really tell us anything exactly and we thought the he was just clueless so we decided to bring her to another vet who again operated on our cat to close the opening and prescribed some antibiotics. The 2nd vet said that our cat was probably allergic to the thread that was used during the spay surgery. This operation with the 2nd vet and the antibiotics didn't work as the hole came back after a few weeks. We finally brought our cat to the most reccommended vet in the city (a bit far from where I live). He also operated on the cat and prescribed another round of antibiotics. Even the best vet in the city doesn't know what's happening exactly. He thinks something wrong happened when we got our cat spayed. He took some blood tests and we are currently waiting for the results.

Does anyone know what the hole is? Has anyone had any similar experience?

Thanks in advance.

Hi. So, so sorry your poor girl has gone through so much!! Does this last vet think he resolved the problem and just doesn't know why it happened, or did he not get the hole closed? If he was able to close it, does the site look likes it is healing - or did this last surgery just happen?

The only thing even remotely similar to me is my brother-in-law who had a j-tube (feeding tub to the intestines) pulled out a couple of weeks ago and it is still not healing. They think the tissue surrounding the area is probably infected and not allowing proper healing. But, how something like that could go on for a year with your cat and not have caused additional problems is beyond me.

In addition to the blood work is the vet testing any of the tissue he might have had to remove during surgery while repairing the hole?

You might want to consider seeing if you have a vet university nearby and asking your vet if it is possible to involve them.

Post-op abscesses aren't rare (in humans or animals). And if it's a big enough abscess, the only option is to go in surgically, clean it out, and flush it with antibiotics. Systemic antibiotics won't touch it. It sounds to me like that's what's going on. You could maybe suggest that to your vet; I don't know why they haven't thought of it already.

Unfortunately, the vet didnt get to close the hole either. He prescribed antibiotics for 3 consecutive months but there was no change whatsoever so the doctor stopped the antibiotics. That's when he decided to do some additional tests. Aside from the blood test, he also used a swab to collect some samples from inside the hole. He also said that he's been in contact with vets from overseas to see if they know this particular case but he hasnt mentioned anything about that yet.

Thanks for your reply. I will mention it to the vet on our next appointment.

Hi, thanks for your reply. Yes, the current vet has done the surgery/cleaning already. He also left a tube to flush out the pus. However, the hole wasn't getting better still. :(

Unfortunately, the OP has not been back on this site since they posted in 2019, so I doubt you will get a response from them. Have any of the vets suggested it is a sort of abscess, and have they drained, cleaned, and inserted a drainage tube? If there is damaged/dead tissue, that usually will require debridement to remove that tissue and stop the spread.

Has your cat had an antibiotic? How long since she was spayed? an abscess can take months to heal if that is what it is. Sometimes the incision can come a little apart and it takes longer to heal too. If it hasn't been long, swab the area with wound cleaner (do not spray, that sound scares them) and observe it. If it is clear drainage with maybe a little blood it is normal, if it turns white, yellow, or green, it is infected.
