Breathing Problems???? New Owner 6 Month Kitten

Hey everyone new cat owner here. I adopted my baby at 6 months old 3 days ago on Monday. The first 2 days were rough. He wasn’t eating and would hide. Finally last night and today he can’t get enough of me. He plays all days is very active doesn’t sleep much. Chasing curtains and is now eating. Poops and peas regularly. Last night tho I got worried because when I was cuddling him he would purr fast and breath fast. He then came to my arms and started fall asleep but was breathing fast or heavy. I’m not sure which. When he’s playing or after he’s playing form running around meh has no issues. Not breathing fast or anything. His purr goes loud and soft loud and soft and so on. It’s very relaxing. I’m. Just worried. I read a lot about liquid in the lungs and respiratory issues. I read about every little thing. Am I being overly concerned? If he was ill would he refrain from doing acitivities? He loves to pretend hunt by the way. Cutest thing. Would wiggle his back and jump and go under the couch.

Also forgot to mentions this only happens when I cuddle with him and only sometimes. When he was sleeping under the dresser he was silent and not any unusual breathing

Has he been tested for leukemia and FIV? I had a kitten with similar issues and she had leukemia. Not to fear monger at all, but if he hasnt been tested, I would do that ASAP. My kitten had liquid in her abdomen, restricting her ability to breath and her heart's ability to pump blood.

Yes he went to the vet a week before I got him and got tested for everything and got neutered. Everything was negative. Also when he was cuddling with me he kept on running around and jumping and come straight back to me for more cuddling. I tend to over worry in general even before having a pet. Obviously this is where it works in my favor because I want the best for my kitten.

To determine if her breathing is too fast you want her "Resting Respiratory Rate". They key word here is resting - the cat needs to be totally asleep and at that point time how many breaths she takes in a minute - you are looking for 20-30 breaths per minute then (can be a little faster in kittens). If it is faster than that you should discuss with your vet because that can indicate heart issues.

If she is not resting, especially if she is purring her breathing will be much faster, even cuddled up on you she's unlikely to be fully asleep. This is totally normal.

As someone who did lose a cat to heart condition that I first noticed from her breathing rate hitting 40bpm its a good measure to watch for but ONLY when they are truly resting.

Meaning fast purr fast purring. When he stops the purr for a second he then takes no breath. Almost irregular if that make sense. It’s just in complete rhythm. I’m so sorry to hear about your cat. Ahhh thank you!! He is such a affectionate cat. So much that I can’t sleep ahah. He always jumps into my bed and squeezes himself into my arms and body. Puts his white paws in my face gently. So nice. Then when I let him out of my room he becomes a wild cat! He has such a personality

hey mummy I finally was able watch him as he sleeps. On average he had 30 bps and as u said kitten might be higher. I’m so glad it’s normal. He seems very relaxed when sleeping and never breathing through the moutg. It’s crazy how much I worry about this guy. Thank you for all ur help

Yep, taking in your smell and purring, completely normal
A piece of advice, stop reading and googling everything! You will drive yourself crazy doing this! Something normal can become life or death in your mind based on what you read.
