Hi all,

With the closing of Rad Cat, I need to figure out a good recipe for my cat's favorite protein, venison. Does anyone have a good recipe that contains NO chicken/turkey/duck?

Thank you!

Maybe buy venison and use a pre-mix with it? Hare-Today.com sells venison.

I still need organs with a pre-mix though, right? Which animal organs do you think I should use? Hare-Today only has boneless venison with no organs.

Boneless organ less meat can be used with a pre-mix such as EZComplete. If you plan to include organs, a pre-mix such as Alnutrin for Meat and Bone should be used instead.

I use Dr. Lisa Pierson’s recipe at catinfo.org, and I sometimes use beef liver instead of chicken liver. With her recipe, you have to buy and mix the individual supplements.

Would eggshell be a problem? I’ve used both EZ Complete and Alnutrin. My cats like them and they’re super easy, but they do have eggshell in them.

You know Rad Cat Venison contains egg yolk, right?

EZ has chicken liver, however, and the OP said no poultry ....

TC Feline Plus has a premix with beef liver but no poultry included otherwise -- calcium carbonate is the cal source. You could order HT's boneless venison (HT is excellent, I've used their boneless meats before and am starting up again) and just use the premix to balance the meals.

But eggs and chicken are different proteins, at least that is what Mikey's vet said. He tested high positive for an egg allergy, but no allergies to chicken.

I think there can be an allergy to eggs but not to chicken but I'm not so sure about the other way round. Not sure though.

Rabbit goes well with Venison. Neither of my cats like poultry so I feed them primarily rabbit and/or venison.

Any thoughts on lamb liver? Could liver alone satisfy the organ requirement?

I’ve never used lamb liver, but I’ve used chicken, beef and rabbit livers. I follow Dr. Pierson’s recipe at www.catinfo.org so the only organ I ever use is liver.

If you can find some ethnic butchers near you, they'll often have goat liver that you could use. Lamb liver should be fine too.

If you can source organs, this may work for you. I adapted it from the TC Feline "Original Raw Cat Food" recipe, took a few things from Dr. Pierson's formula, and AAFCO nutritional requirements document. I make it with boneless lamb leg, lamb heart, and lamb liver. I've considered supplementing with other organs (spleen, pancreas) but haven't done so yet. If your cat isn't sensitive to lamb or beef, you could use venison for the muscle meat and a different animal for the heart and organs (not sure how easy it is to source deer heart).

700g (1-1/2 lbs.) raw ground muscle meat WITHOUT bone
200g (1 cup) raw ground heart
100g (1/2 cup) raw ground liver
2 cups water
2
raw egg yolks (no egg whites)
15 tablets of Bone-Up
1/2 tsp.
iodized “Half Salt” or “Light Salt”
2000 mg Salmon oil
2000 mg Taurine + extra to account for destruction during freezing
400 IU Vitamin E
¼ of tablet of Vitamin B complex
(+ 1 packet of gelatin)

The above makes one batch. Even though I'm using heart, I do add more taurine. AAFCO doesn't have a maximum limit for it, so I do keep it in there just to be safe, since I can't find accurate info on how much taurine is in lamb heart. The Bone-Up provides the calcium and trace minerals.

Yes, sorry, I plan on using Alnutrin + Calcium for Cats. Their recipe says:

4 lb ground raw meat [no bone] (in my case, bonless venison)
1 lb ground organ mix with liver (rabbit organs)
6 level scoops Alnutrin with EggShell Calcium

and then just multiply this recipe by 4, for example. anything else i'm leaving out?

If you use Alnutrin you can use any liver source.
In this case is there any reason to not just choose the cheapest liver source that Hare Today offers?

Also, for their rabbit organs, the website says: "Approximate percentages of organs 50% liver, 25% heart and 25% kidney may also contain some lung." Do I need to make any changes here since it's not all liver?
