Hi guys, just got my cat neutered today, he's turning a year old in November. When I picked him up they said everything went well. But when I got home I noticed there was blood everywhere he would sit. Called the vet and unfortunately they were closed for the day.

Anyways he was extremely agressive after vet visit, hissing and growling, so I couldn't get near him to check his incision area for a while. I finally managed to get a picture after he calmed down a bit and saw something hanging out of his incision area. I can't help but worry. Is this normal?

Hello hablat, welcome to TCS!

This is definitely not normal. Please bring him back to the vet. Is there an emergency number to call your vet?

Thank you so much guys. I brought him back to the vet this morning. They said it looked like his cord came out and that they used glue to close the incision before. Normally the cord would stay inside, but it seems to have come off. They said he should be fine, but he might need antibiotics afterwards to make sure he does not get infections. I really hope he will be okay, he looked visibly weaker this morning. I've always read that neutering is simple and rarely any complication happens, but it seems we got unlucky :(

Well, just make sure the surgery site is always clean from now on to avoid any other complications.

Hope your kitty get better soon.

Thank you. How do I go about making sure it stays clean after? I'm guessing the incision site would still be painful to touch afterwards. Also in general my cat hates being touched around that area.

Oh, it's good you got him back to the vet's so quickly! Complications are rare, but do happen. :vibes::vibes::vibes:that he heals quickly!

Generally it's enough to keep an eye on the incision and make sure he doesn't chew or excessively lick it. If he does, you might have to get an e-collar from the vet. Just look for pus, excessive seeping or major swelling. He'll probably be fine, though.

Just make sure litter or litter dust don't get sick on the incision site. If you can't clean it, he might just lick it off but just make sure he don't over lick the area and start nibbling on it.

I know it sounds worrisome, but it's just for the next few days or so.

Vet just called me they said they've pushed the tissue back up and stapled the incision close. They will be putting an ecollar on him as well. And he will need to take antibiotics along with his pain meds and some other medication to reduce swelling. He will need to come to thet vet after 2 weeks to get the staples removed. He's going to hate me so much for bringing him back and forth to vet. He's probably traumatized of the place by now.

It's for the better, don't worry. He'll soon forget what happened.. Just shower him with lots of love and hugs :redheartpump: :hearthrob: :itslove: :hearthrob: :redheartpump:

He won't hate you, but he might hate the vet. Not necessarily, though. Our last cat was known at the vets' office as "the cat from hell", but our current cat actually thinks he's on a social visit.

It would be a good idea to leave his carrier out as a bed so that he doesn't associate it with a dreaded visit to the vet. That way it'll be easier to get him in it when necessary.
