Female Cat Urinating On Things Because She Wants To

Oh, I came to the site with hopes of getting answers, and relieving a lot of stress in my home.
So we have two cats in our home, one's a male who is neutered, and one is a female who is not spayed. We have had the issue of random urinations on personal items left on the table in the kitchen, and a few other locations in the house. It seems to have been items placed in plastic bags like shopping bags left on the kitchen table. We have since installed a security camera setup that is motion activated to try and catch whoever is doing it. Somehow, the camera either stops working, the room is too dark, or the cat pees elsewhere... That is until today! I set a trap out of a plastic bag with a t-shirt inside on the table with optimal light settings in a camera trained right on the bag. We left the house and within 15 minutes got a notification of motion detected. We watched as our female cat got onto the table, walked across the table like she was on a mission, smelled the bag and proceeded to pee on it. She then jumped off the table as if she just went up there to pee on it and leave. She uses the litter boxes as any cat does, it just seems like she pees on our things for no reason other than to be a jerk. How do we go about finding the reasoning of this, and most importantly stopping her from doing it?

Hi. That is really weird! I can only offer that it might be connected to her not yet being spayed. It could also have something to do with an attraction to plastic bags. My cat loves to chew on them - and can tell when there is one laying around just about anywhere. But, she has never peed on them!
Hopefully others will soon offer some insight. Everyone on this site is very helpful!

:yeah: A lot of cats urinate on plastic bags or rubber-backed floor mats. Presumably it's the smell that attracts them, so all you can really do is make sure none are left lying around.

Its other things left on the table too. I forgot to say that. I graduated college and when we returned home, I set my gown on the table, and the next morning it smelled like urine.
My girlfriend's 4 month old purse just got peed on a week ago which was on the table. Her expensive camera was peed on a while ago. It just seems like she gets the urge to be an ass and pee on our things.

Hello and welcome to TCS. Sorry it's litter box avoidance/territorial peeing that brought you here. :alright:

How old is your female cat? If she is 6 months or older, it could be hormonal, so I would suggest getting her spayed and seeing if that helps.

A vet checkup is also a good idea, because she could be suffering from an UTI.

How well does she get along with the other cat? Have they always lived together?

Shes at least 3 years old. She gets along great with the male. They love each other to pieces. Its just odd as there isnt any peeing on anything but things on the table. Occasionally there might be pee on an article of clothing, but mostly the table.

Both cats know the counters and tables are off limits.

We have thought about spaying her, but it's so expensive.

Look for a low cost spay / neuter clinic or spaymobile. Your local SPCA or Humane society web site may have info on low cost spay /neuter assistance. If you're in the US, some vet offices participate in a program called SNAP. You can get info here Spay-Neuter Assistance Program – Stop the Cycle.

Yes, where are you located? We can help you to look. Spaying her should help with this issue. She must be uncomfortable.

You might also look for enzymatic cleaners that you could use on your table. The urine smell is likely not being permanently removed - drawing her back there time and time again. If this has gone on for a really long time, even completely cleaning the table might not work. I don't know what the table is made out of, but there has to be something on the market that you could try. Folks on this site will have some suggestions for you about that, I am sure.

Unspayed females often pee on things. Also, a 3 year old unspayed female is at risk for pyometra (uterine infection). Getting her spayed would be best for her health and also would have a good chance of helping with the peeing problem.

I think it would make sense to get her spayed and the cost would be worth it. She might be doing it to simply lay down her own scent. If you look at the things she's peeing on, it's stuff that's brought into the home from outside in some form or fashion. As annoying as it is, it might he her way of saying "you belong to me now."
