Hi folks! As the time ticks down before I move back to my university city and into my pet friendly apartment there, I've been thinking about cats even more than usual (I'm sure some of you can relate!). When I'm settled in my new place I will be going to the local SPCA to look for a cat friend to share my life with!

My plan at present is to go in and let the shelter staff know what I'm looking for demographics wise (an adult cat between 1-5 years old, fairly laid back, good with or at least tolerant of other animals) and have them let me know what cats fit what I'm looking for and then see if any of those cats choose me. I've been looking at the SPCA website too but there's still some time before I'll be looking for a cat so I realize there will likely be some turnover, and between that and the sparse information on the website I'm trying not to get too invested in the pictures :p

But, being the emotional person that I am I wanted to hear your cute stories- how did you know your cat was the one for you? How did you know your cat chose you?
I spent weeks going to the humane society and spending time with all the cats, I knew i wanted a adult cat that preferably didn't go to the humane society because of bathroom issues. One day I was showing my grandma photos of cats (she doesnt really like cats) and she said she really liked one named Lucy so I biked to the humane society and went into a visitation room. She was super sweet and cuddly even though the sheet said she wasnt too affectionate. My father also liked the cat which was a another good thing because he didnt like cats at the time. We adopted her the next day.

I hope they both love her! Everyone in my family has always loved cats and I can't comprehend how anyone could NOT love them.

*Purry is good. VERY good.* What a little treasure! What is his name and how about your other cats? We love pictures here. ;):winkcat:

Princess was a kitten at the vets office and my mom would not let me leave without her. She was clinging to me very hard. I took her home and tried to take a shower and she cried the entire time so I held her in the shower and she just purred and sat there. She's never done it again and is not a fan of water but she is still my sweet girl. She is 12.
I had a small black and white thing come running at me one night when i was outside and I thought she was a skunk. it was a little tortie i called Flower. She had 4 kittens although one didn't make it. George was the first one and he was such a unique color i had to keep him. He's been with me all 9 years of his life.
Ninja was an impulse (I wanted an adult cat) when we saw a free cat day at the humane society. We looked at all the cats and even picked one but he was declawed and i was worried my other cats would beat him up. We were about to give up and go home when a worker told us there were some in this back room. we went back there and there were 2 black and white kittens marked as being 5 months old (free cats over 5 months). My boyfriend and I each picked one up. Ninja was in my arms purring his brain our and the other just wanted back in the cage. They even told us his date of birth and he was 4 months exactly. He is 6 years old now.
Theo is the only cat i really felt chose me. I was taking classes to be a vet assistant and we had to spend a day at the local open floor cat shelter. I knew going in I was not leaving with any of them no matter how cute. I saw all the cats and refrained from falling in love. I saw a little back room labeled geriatrics and I walked in to a bunch of grumpy old kitties looking ragged. I walked out to the patio and was petting all the sweet old kitties and out came this tall skinny lynx point. Taller then every cat but looking like he was going to die any minute. I picked him up and i was sold. He put his head on my shoulder and wrapped his paw around my arm as if to hug me back. it took everything to leave him and rejoin my class. and every opportunity i returned to see him and pet him more. I found out he was 16 and had just been brought back to the shelter by a previous adopter because they were moving and didn't want to take him :fuming:. He has hyperthroidism, food aversion, a neurological condition that makes him walk like he is drunk, starting kidney failure and probably won't live more the a few weeks they tell me. I still had to have him. I got the ok from landlord and boyfriend and brought him home the next day. I just wanted him to have a loving home to live whatever days he had left. Its been almost a year and he is doing amazing. off all meds except thyroid pill. gained weight and enjoying his life with us. I don't know that i will ever adopt a younger cat again. Senior pets need love too!!

May you be many times blessed, javannalynn javannalynn , for your great heart and for putting that into action for your furmily! Special loves to your elder statesman. My furmily right now are 14, 13, and 10. One of our furmily lived to 21, another to 19, so yes, the mature cats are definitely loved here!

Shortly before I adopted her, Kacie was one of the cats being highlighted at the shelter for St. Patrick's day. I was actually in the room when one of the workers was trying to get a picture of her wearing a green necklace. She tolerated the process but obviously didn't like wearing something unfamiliar.

Later on in the week when I was spending time with her, something clicked. She wasn't a loud cat and she clearly loved to bunt my hands and arms. I decided she was the cat for me and I adopted her.

A few months later I decided to adopt a second cat. For some reason I wanted to adopt another tortoiseshell cat. Coco was the perfect match. She was friendly enough, plus she was returned not too long ago. I wanted to give her a second chance at a forever home.

Oh, good on ya x 2, flamesabers flamesabers ! Being a torti lover myself, I can certainly understand. I'd never thought about a tortoiseshell before adopting Tarifa, who came recommended highly by my friend who did rescues/adoptions. I needed someone who was very friendly with other cats, to fit into our large cat family. Right away, she was recommended. I'd never really seen any tortoiseshells before, but decided that since she needed a loving permanent home and I had one, I'd adopt her. Fourteen years later, I am grateful every day that we found one another.

At the shelter there was a short bio for each of my cats, but unfortunately I can't remember what exactly was written about them. Something I really enjoy about them is how their personalities complement each other. Kacie's a quiet and more independent cat, while Coco is much more talkative and loves to be petted and sit on my lap. It's like I got the best of both worlds. :yess:

Last October was difficult. It was the one year anniversary of my dad passing away. I was already in a state of depression, then my sweet little cat Mini also passed away. My husband told me to go to the local shelter to just cuddle some kitties because cats are very therapeutic for my clinical depression. I saw a cat that reminded me of the cat I had growing up and asked about him. They said he just came back from his second failed adoption. He was a biter, he didn’t like kids and didn’t get along with other pets either. He took a while to warm up to people and even then wasn’t very friendly. As I was looking at him through the cage, he was looking intently back at me. Despite all their warnings I asked to hold him. He practically jumped in my arms after taken out of the cage, and was purring and nuzzling against my face. The staff were in shock. They said he never was like this. I told Oscar it was time to come home and adopted him that same day. Oscar was meant to be ours. My husband came home from work that day and Oscar went right up to him and was soon purring in his lap. I’m not sure about the cat they described at the shelter, because that is not Oscar. He is a loving wonderful cat.

This is the thing. Anyone in the kind of environment that an ACC, Humane Society or "shelter" provides is bound to be very stressed. The cats can usually hear the noise of dogs, which stresses anyone in their right mind! and being in a cage is extremely stressful -- just ask anyone who's ever been in prison. Cats in the wild defend spacious territories and while our cats should never be allowed to roam, they do need space. And the very best and most caring "shelter" is still no substitute for a loving, comfortable home. It's no surprise that Oscar was erroneously described and judged. He had no opportunity to let his Oscar-ness glow!

I have a lot of cats so there are a few different ways!

Lucy & Ethel were the first two cats I ever had. We got them when I was 1. They lived in a barn that came with the property my parents bought.

Peaches was next, many years later! My dad loved orange cats, so my mom called a local pet shop and asked if they had any orange female cats (Lucy was also orange) and they said they did. We went down and got her. It all happened very spontaneously! She was such a terror! Causing havoc, biting etc. Luckily she grew out of that and at her young age of 18 is super sweet!

When I was in 8th grade we thought Peaches might want a friend. Then came Molly! Molly was the best cat ever! My mom wanted a black and white cat, so again she called the pet shop to see if they had any B&W cats. They didn't, but they said they would call if they ever did get any in. We looked and left SO MANY CATS until Molly came along! My mom knew she was the one when she sat of my moms lap and fell asleep.

Next was Emma. My grandmother had died and i saw a Calico kitten at a petshop that I needed to get! My parents really didn't want one, but I guess because of the circumstances they said okay. Sadly Emma had distemper and died on my Grandma's birthday.

But if Emma never came and left so quick, we would never have gotten Sadie & Kasey! This time we decided that we were going to get kittens in pairs. Molly had a hard time when she was a baby being alone. We used Petfinder this time. I kept looking for kittens and saw these two, who were named Emily & Abigail, on petfinder, but kept passing them by. When I was at my uncles house we were looking on Petfinder and my mom saw them. She liked them and called the organization where they were located. They were located in a dump! My mom decided to get Kasey, but after Sadie tried to steal her pen she she was writing out a check for their payment, we ended up getting Sadie as well. Sadie is a bit of an odd duck, but she follows me around like my shadow to this day! When we got them they were messy and covered in flees. But once cleaned they bonded with Molly and she ended up raising them. Kasey & Molly specifically had an awesome bond!

Next came Jasper. The only boy in the cat family. He was actually my neighbors cat. He was outdoors and always came over and hung out on my deck. He was such a nice little guy! The bad thing was that he used to cross the street and go into the field across the way - and we live on a busy street. One night he was crossing the street and my dad was watching. He said the cat was coming across the street and a car was coming as well. The car hit him, but no one could find his body. Looked for days and nothing - it was just gone! We assumed that it had gotten sucked up in the cars wheel well and that they would find a dead cat sucked up in the car. My dad called the neighbor and told her what happened and she said she had she hadn't seen him in months and could care less. Well lo and behold a few nights later, who shows up on the deck scared and nervous but Jasper! Not a mark on him at all. We told the neighbor he was alive, but again she said she didn't care. She was moving and one of the other neighbors was helping. I guess Jasper went to her house and she saw him, but told him to go away. He moved in! Poor boy is so neurotic! So I am not sure if he chose us, because I can't say that we actually chose him.

Lastly is Daisy! After Molly died I had a dream that she was coming back to us and that we would find her on our way home from our vacation in Maine. We always take the vacation at the same time, but this year my brother made us change the time due to work. I had been in communication with this animal shelter about finding a cat, but none ever felt right. The night before we came home they emailed and said they had a new cat and wanted to know if we wanted to meet her the following day. The following day was they day that we were leaving Maine and heading back home. When I met her and held her I just knew she was the one! The feeling was the same as with Molly. When she came home she knew where Molly hid all of her toys, knew all of the cats and interacted the same way with them that Molly did and she knew the house so well! She even smells exactly the same as Molly! I feel like this kitten was 100% meant to be here. She reminds me so much of Molly!

Just hoping and praying they are all spayed/neutered, and please keep your cats indoors only! It's what caring people do to keep their cats safe.

I don't understand how the neighbor having an outdoor cat, which she abandoned when she moved, that I took in somehow equates to me not being a caring person and not having spayed/neutered indoor cats when in fact they are.
