Hi all!
Buttercup has developed a new habit, she prefers to drink out of my water glass.
She has fresh water out and changed regularly that she has no problem with using, except now she prefers to steal mine.
I always have water with me, and due to my health I nap a lot. Buttercup just walks over and happily laps out of my glass, and she has been waking me up by standing on my head to drink at night. I am careful not have any drink other than water or iced tea, I know not to leave milk or tea with milk around!
My question is more for myself than her, could I get sick from her drinking from my glass? Most of the time I wouldn’t know since I’m sleeping, and need to take my meds when I wake. It doesn’t really bother me, I just roll my eyes, I just want to be sure I’m not going to catch anything other than “cooties”. :popworm:
Thanks!

Im not sure exactly. Personally, I worry about kitty mouth bacteria, plus it weirds me out. I bought one of those plastic cups that has a lid and a straw and use that for nightstand water

I had this same problem!

I got a Contigo water bottle for around the house with a auto lock lid and keep a water glass on the side table for them. That way I have portable cold water that I don't have to worry about spilling or then drinking. And they have their water glass. I use a low wide glass for the cats so they can't tip it over.

I can't share though because of allergies. Once the cats drink it's bad for me to have any. I can actually tell if it happens within minutes.

That would be the simple answer! I just prefer the look and feel of a glass to a water bottle (silly I know, but they are so ugly! Lol!)
I think she just wants to feel close to me and copy what I do, my son laughs and rolls his eyes! It’s just that I can’t catch her all the time, so I will probably start using a bottle.... oh the humanity of my first world problems! Sheesh!

Well, when you are sleeping its appearance does not matter. You can drink from a glass the rest of the day. Of course it is fine to drink from a glass if you know that silly cat will not tip it over and wake you up with cold water.

Only one zoonotic disease can spread by mouth: rabies. If she is vaccinated you'll be fine.

I know another person who makes two glasses of water and keeps one on the coffee table for the cat because their cat does the same thing.

Hmmm...I just realized that my thoughts on this could definitely be put in the "You might be a cat person if" thread.
My cats wants to drink out of my glass, no problem. Another person drinks out of my glass, BIG problem!
Yep! Definitely that kind of thread.

My major problem with Jasmine drinking from my glass is she leaves fur on the rim. Ooh, ick! That, and the fact that I like being able to drink things that are okay for me but bad for her. I keep a very close eye on my milk and herbal tea when she's around.

Margret -- Fur? Think of it as extra fiber in your diet! As for op, & others with cats drinking from their glasses:

What I did was buy two Yeti cups. One. they come with cat proof lids. Even if the cat urns it over. Second, they are made with stainless steel, double walled with a vacuum in-between. They will. keep coffee hot to warm drinkable for 6 or so hours. With ice, they can keep water cold for almost a day, even if you leave them in the car. I have one Yeti for ice water. The other is for coffee. Unfortunately, they are not cheap. You can buy from their web site, Amazon, or most sporting good stores.

Careful with plain iced tea, too, though... even without milk -- the caffeine isn't good for kitties (unless you use decaf).
:)

I don't have a problem with my cat drinking out of my glasses, but she does purposely knock them over. What I do in my house is keep a small nightstand or some sort of furniture with a little recessed shelf hidden behind a sliding door panel --something of that sort-- within easy reach of our bed. I then put the glass inside a drawer(!), or set inside on a shelf, and close the drawer or door panel while we sleep. Otherwise, we wake up to a pool of liquid spilled everywhere.

Lol- fur?! Ewwww!:barfgreen:
I’m so glad I’m not the only one, misery (and ingesting cat spit) loves company!:celebrate:
First it was the dog, I used to set my tea cup on the hardwood floor by the couch when I would nap, until one day. I heard a strange sound that woke me, and I looked down to see a ShihTzu puppy with his whole head stuffed down into my tea slurping away! :spew:
Needless to say my tea moved to the side table. Now I have to watch out for her, and to try and remember which pet prefers which drinks, and which one of them wants to dunk their face- since Vadar now climbs the back of the couch to get to anything yummy left unguarded....

who could say no to that face, and the “sorry Mum” hugs?! The two of them are just terrible, knowing their begging faces together are just too much to stand strong against!:gaah::rolleyes:

Fiber lol! Well that’s one way to see the bright side of things haha! :banana1:
I’ll look into those mugs, they sound great, and stainless doesn’t hold smells or tastes like plastic does- and they look better too!
Unless I find a SheRa cup, and matching adult footy pjs, then I’m all for plastic:bunnydance:

I was wondering about caffeine too, but since (I promise!) you don’t want to see my dog on caffeine, I try to use decaf when relaxing.
Using the drawer is a great idea, I didn’t think of that! Thank you! :p

WARNING! EVIDENCE CONTAINS SCARY PHOTO:
Evidence of Dog after caffeine, (and/or) attempted exorcism (that clearly didn’t go very well)..

Why not get a portable glass bottle? There are a few on Amazon. This one has good ratings:
I have to say, your Buttercup has a strong resemblance to my Mizu! Too cute!

And Butters says “Thank you” too, and that your cat is therefore “VERY Beautiful!” :p

I keep water out for my cat on my coffee table for the same reason. Sigh, as the picture shows. He likes clear glasses (sturdy and short) or a mug. When I drink my coffee, he runs and drinks his water. Might you try this too?
