Please help, I'm crying like you have no idea. But please don't take pitty on me I just want advice. Yesterday, a orange and white cat appeared while my mother was outdoors cooking sausage. It meowed, and was very friendly. It is extreamly sick, and thin looking.

We fed it supper(wet cat food), and I pet it for 3 hours. We got my dogs puppy carrier, put it on the deck and put blankets in it and on it, the cat slept there that night.

He does not appear to been grooming himself,( poorly kept coat) and is not looking very good, so we called the vet, and he has an appointment on Wednesday. My mother is worried he has feline leukemia, so she said if he tests positive she will tell the vet to euthanize him.

We have a very anxious dog, so we can't let the cat inside, despite the fact it keeps trying to get in ( it was obviously was pet, it doesn't mind the dog, wants the house and is friendly).

If the cat tests negative, he is on the WAITING list of the spca, but can't be taken yet, so what would I do in the mean time, since we are going on a three day trip next week, and I'm so confused what to do. He doesn't deserve this, he barely left the carrier today, except to poo once. I can't stop crying, because the dog also hasn't hip problems and we don't know how long she has. Help, I'm drowning in tears. And my brother walked up to me today and asked me "So are we going to kill it? How long?". It. His NAME is Decker, and he Is my beautiful little kitty.

:alright: Bless you for caring for Decker! It sounds like he is lost or abandoned. Please take comfort in the fact that now he is safe with you. It is likely that he is skinny from hunger and thirst. The sad part of being a lost kitty is eating bugs and drinking dirty water to survive (run-off water from landscaping often has chemicals for fertilizers, pesticides and yard maintenance). You did a great first step in feeding him canned food. He might need electrolyte replacement as well; you can mix up a homemade version and add some to his food (our TCS member Hissy has a website "kitten-rescue com" that has a recipe). Right now, he mostly needs rest and affection - there used to be an old country saying about horses that "a good grooming is as good as a feeding" and I think it holds true for cats so I would gently comb his fur with a cheap plastic comb.I hope that you can keep him comfortable outside - not too hot or cold. You can add ice to his water. Speaking of water, try to give him bottled or filtered water because city water has chemicals too & his kidneys need rest.
Right now, Decker is enjoying safety, security, and love - it means more to him than you can imagine & is very, very healing. :petcat::catlove::clapcat::happycat:
I will keep Decker and you to my prayers and for your poor dog as well! I am hoping for a good report from the vet tomorrow. You can ask around to see if someone can take in Dexter while you are gone for the 3 days. Please keep us updated!
And thank you again for being such an angel to Decker!

Could you tell me the link to the electrolyte fluid recipe, because I cannot find it

Thank you so much for taking care of Decker, and taking him in to your heart. I agree that no matter what else is going on with him, the grooming, feeding, petting and love you are providing is a godsend to him right now. Once you know what's going on at his appointment Wednesday, you might have more options for his care while you're out of town those three days. Even if someone could just stop by to feed him, that would help. Maybe the same person who is watching over your dog wouldn't mind a little extra chore?

If you can buy KMR (Kitten Milk Replacement) at a pet shop or maybe a Walmart or Target and mix up a saucer - three or four ounces per day, it would help a great deal with extra calories, & calcium and such. Also kitten kibble and canned food would also help for the same reason.

Thank you for rescuing this cat. Please keep us informed on how he and you are doing.

Thank you all, tomorrow is his appointment, and I am desperately hoping he does not has FelV, Feline Leukemia, because then he will be euthanized (Mother already talked to me about this, and is adamant that it will happen). She thinks it is best I don't go to the appointment, for my "Mental well being" since she is soooooo sure he has Feline Leukemia, there may Ben a storm coming, if so, If he survives, she has agreed to let him stay in our mudroom. He is so sweet and Id hate to lose him

Well, that's some positive news, at least. I hope this is not too intrusive of a question, but do you think you could be ok going to decker's appointment tomorrow so that you can advocate for him, and hear the vet's diagnosis? I only ask because I notice that you said "mental wellbeing" in quotes, as if maybe you were skeptical of either your ability to go, or of your mom's intentions for not wanting you there. Please forgive me if I'm wrong. If there's any chance that going might help you to care for the cat (or, alternatively, give you a chance to say goodbye if necessary,) maybe you should be there. I hope everything goes well tomorrow either way, and that Decker is safely in your mud room tomorrow night!

I suggest you go with your mother to the vets. I don't want to make you paranoid, but there has been what might best be called a "premature" euthanasia reported in the past day on a thread on the TCS. A cat was put down due to having seizures. But the cat had been started on a medication that had a good chance of controlling them. However, after two or three days on the medication, the seizures continued. So the mother had the cat put down. The problem is, the medication takes one or two weeks to be effective.

Take Tinydestroyer's advice. Go to the vet with Decker. Listen carefully to the vet's diagnose. If he does have FeIV or Feline Leukemia, or other medical condition, ask: 1) What is the prognoses for Decker? 2) Will he be infectious? 3) will he be in pain? Only with that information can you properly make an intelligent
decision about euthanizing Decker.

I, too, hope that Decker will be taking up residence in your mud room tomorrow evening.

Does your mother like cats?

:heartshape::vibes::hearthrob:I am so glad to hear that Decker will be given shelter during the storm! And I am continuing to lift Decker up in prayer and to send positive thoughts your way. You are an A-1 cat guardian! I am counting the hours until we get your update about the vet exam tomorrow.

Don't worry, I am going, she simply suggested that I don't.

I am going to the appointment, but I think my mother assume she if he has it, that because of how've sick he is, it must be an advanced stage, and he is therefore suffering. She loves cats, grew up with them, an de had two of them for a good many years (they we're old cats). I will take your advice to make sure euthanasia is the right option should I choose to make it. Thanks

Good news! And bad news. He does not have feline leukemia, (Yay). But he does have Feline immunodeficiency virus. He is back at home, and also got a rabies vaccine, and a mouthwash for his plasma gingivitis

I'm so glad he's with you right now, and receiving care. Did the vet mention that he had any other secondary infections from the FiV other than gingivitis? How is he doing in the mud room?
I admit that I'm not super knowledge about fiv, but I do know there isn't really a cure. Just treatment of symptoms. My coworker rescued a fiv positive cat a few months ago, and he's already looking so much better with good nutrition, clean water, parasite control and care. Missing any of these things is more difficult on a cat with a compromised immune system, I would think. Dod the vet offer any treatment options or advice? Do you think Decker is a good candidate for any of them?
Hoping y'all weather the storm ok, and so glad Decker is inside!

So the storm didn't happen, very much, so he stayed outside today. But apparently there were raccoons by the carrier last night (My brothers saw them) but the cat was out on a nighttime walk. I am worried they will kill him. Should I lock the carrier door tonight, so he wouldn't be able to

Please don't leave Decker outdoors. Nothing good ever happened to cat outdoors. Other than being rescued and being made an indoor cat.

Can't you leave him in your mud room? Leave him lots of water and dry food. Maybe two litter boxes? He should make it just fine for three days.

By the way, raccoons can kill cats. Decker is particularly vulnerable, given his weakened state.
