Food Dish/bowl Factors

For food I have been using 6" glass mini pie pans. They are tempered glass and oven safe so should be very durable. The sides are very shallow and extend outward so it should be easy on the whiskers. The best part is they were only about $4 at my local grocery store.

It is..you can probably get normal steel bowls, the diff is stainless steel is made to not corrode.

EmmiTemmi yes. After reading about that and other various bad things occurring with products made there, I said no way would I take the chance, or at least I'd try and eliminate risks.

I also use Corelle for my cats big bowls for water, smaller pasta bowls for dry food, or paper plates sometimes, and the smaller bread and butter plates for wet food. Easy to keep clean, stick them right in the dishwasher.

thanks, thats Itty, my little DIVA female. she is the one that had so much problems with her spay. Healthy happy girl now she loves to lay on top my kitchen cabinets and watch me.

They go in the dishwasher with our human dishes on high water temperature, I've never confessed this to anyone ....)

Mine go in with our dishes. If its hot enough to sanitize them separate its hot enough for together. I do soak and rinse them first so nothing is really stuck on them.

I really miss having a dishwasher... You never know how great it is until it's gone! For now, I have a 'human' dish sponge, and a 'cat' dish sponge.

Yep, we soak & rinse everything. I noticed your signature message "Vini, Vidi, Velcro - I came, I saw, I stuck around." That's exactly how it happened with me! I was surfing the web for cat info when we first started feeding Gypsy inside. Found TCS where everyone is supportive and caring and never left.

I was at the local Walmart last night and picked up a Corelle dessert bowl to use after reading so many of y'all liked that brand. It was only about 3 dollars. Seems to work alright. Now to figure out what to do with water bowls. He has three out in different spots and is still trying to find water in the sink (and it's clean!) Maybe he is just bored...

I don't remember how it initially started but the Big Guy LOVES being able to lap at a stream of water from the kitchen sink faucet. I put one of those water filters on the faucet last year, and he has to crank his head a bit cuz it hangs a little lower, but he still really likes it. And he's drinking from his water bowls as well. I've tried a couple different on-the-floor fountains but got bored having to clean 'em so between the two of us we worked out the faucet thing and everybody's happy

I would suggest a fountain if you haven't tried and can get one. A lot of cats enjoy moving water. Mooch used to splash water everywhere before we got one.

I have to say thanks for this thread. After learning about whisker stress from you guys last week, I replaced her small steel bowls a couple of days ago with lipped ceramic plates and she had cleaned up the wet food since then (of course being able to choose girly patterns is way better than plain metal ware ). I just assumed the behaviors of pulling food off the plate and leaving some of it untouched at night was that we hadn't yet found the right food for her. Knew there was a reason I came back here You guys are awesome.

With his suppressed immune system Tiberius has serious issues with kitty acne so we too use humans bowls for our kids. Hehe in fact, this may be gross but I simply use our wide lip dinner dishes for them and run them through the dishwasher.

My husband has made the request that the we not share our dishes with the cats so I love the idea of buying the corelle dishes at Wal-Mart! I've found dishes made specifically for kitties to be expensive and tiny.

My cats didn't seem to have any issues with plastic bowls, but they're lighter and side around the floor when they're eating. They also were able to put tooth holes in the plastic ones.

Ceramic and borosilicate glass (Pyrex, Kimax, etc.) bowls seem easier to clean than the plastic as well.

I'm a sucker and buy the cat bowls because I find them adorable. With that said, I mostly have stainless steel bowls and ceramic ones because I did hear plastic is bad. I have saucer plates and also bowls for variety. My cat doesn't care about the pretty bowls -- just what is in them.

The Correlle dessert bowl worked well but the cat still seemed to experienced issues with whisker stress. As I shop often at the myriad thrift stores in my area I've kept my eyes open for alternative. The kibble dish is glass whose original purpose is unknown. The clean canned wet food dish is what I believe to be a glass butter dish. Both work excellently and are great for the cat. He can use the butter dish with shredded wet food (Weruva/Fussie Cat shredded chicken) without needing to lift it and drop it away from the dish. The dish containing the dry food is for the Orijen Regional Red he loves. These are shown on my mouse pad for visibility as the counter top isn't conducive to visibility in picture form.

I use Corelle dessert dishes for wet food and these nifty ceramic RAISED bowls for dry. The cats really like them. The reason why I got the raised bowls is because someone I met at a store recommended them if you have problems with cats vomiting up food. Eliminated the occasional problem (now they only vomit if hairball is involved).

T.J.Maxx or Marshall’s have great prices on pet dishes, often on clearance!
