Hi!
So, I’ve been on a quest to find good wet food for my picky kitty...
I’m looking for:
- grain free
- non fish based
- pate
- no peas, potatoes or any other types of fillers or veggies
- no carrageenan
+ WITH gums (guar gum, xantham gum, locus bean gum, etc).

Does anybody know of a brand or flavor within a brand that meets these requirements?

So far the only one I’ve found is FROMM and my kitty loves it, finishes every bit of it. I did try other brands that don’t have any nasties in them but without gums the texture of pate is gritty and when my cat tries to eat it he licks and food flies out of his mouth and out of the food dish, he doesn’t want to bite it to pick up food, only licks it when it’s on a plate, but will bite it if I offer food on my hand ( Rawz turkey, Hound & gatos gamebird - he ate out of my hand, but ate very little out of the dish).

I really want to have a few good brands in rotation. However, I don’t feel like paying premium prices for so called grain free foods that have a bunch of veggies in them as fillers, might as well go with Fancy feast classics then.

Thanks. Sorry for a long post

I like wellness cores new formulas. They contain guar and xanthum. No carrageenan or grains and the non fish flavors don’t have fish in it at all. They have cranberries and flax but I don’t think those are really a big part of it. They also have a nice selection. Natures variety is good too. It has peas but they are whole so you can pick them out. And there aren’t that many. Maybe three-four a can. Whole earth farms is cheaper and not bad at all. And contains guar and agar gums. Thy have so many options. Most don’t have fish.

Our cats also like Wellness Core -- kitten food and duck/turkey -- both of which I'll feed now that they removed the carrageenan. Our cats get picky about canned food, too, so I'm glad they like Core and Wellness took out the carrageenan!

What about Hound & Gatos?
Nvm...I see it was a texture issue in the original post...
Is agar-agar not a type of gum? I see that in some of the flavors..

The flavor I tried H&G 'Gamebird' had agar-agar and it. I think it only helps the liquidy broth stuff turn into jello.
I honestly don't know why my cat can't manage to scoop the food into his mouth off of the plate, it's downright ridiculous! But Fromm cans have couple of gums in them and the texture is smooth and sticky so when he licks it it just jumps into his mouth

Thanks, guys! I'll pick up a few cans to try :)

I was feeding Fromms to my kitties and it was causing them to poo too much. I had to change and now mostly feeding Primal and Ziwipeak dry raw food. Yes, I am spending too much on just cat food.

What flavors did you feed? Some of them have peas in them, i avoid those. Were they going several times a day or was there just a lot of poo in one go? My kitty didn’t like primal unfortunately.

And no shame in spoiling your kitties I’m sure they appreciate it :catrub:

Have you tried adding water and making sure it's really squished and mixed?

I wondered the same thing, 10009891 10009891 -- did you feed one of the foods with vegetables? I've been thinking of trying Fromms out on our cats but there are only a couple without vegetables. (And they don't seem to be sold in stores much where I live, though I haven't checked everywhere...)

Yes, I did. Food like Rawz and H&G look just fine at the first glance without water as well as with, untill my silly cat starts eating... he will lick, lick, lick for a while and somehow all the added water is gone and dry-ish food is all over the plate and floor and kitty’s face and neck and not in kitty’s tummy, and that’s it, he rather go hungry than make some effort in putting food in his mouth. :sigh: He doesn't have anything physically wrong with him, he will happily pick up and chew on a pieces of raw bison :stars:

I was using the Game Bird Fromms formula. It does have a lot of vegetables in it for some reason. Maybe that's why my cats were pooping 2 to 3 times a day on it. With Primal freeze, they only go once a day.

Im feeding my boy Natural Instinct, Primal frozen raw, and a tbsp of kibble. Why peas are not good for cat? Natural Instinct cans have it.

Not sure why these cat foods put strawberries, pumpkin, carrots, broccoli, lettuce, cranberry, grapes, etc... in their formulas. And everything is "grain free" now yet most foods have rice in it.

Peas are often used in foods as fillers and some foods even contain peas in multiple forms, like "peas" and "pea protein." Cats are total carnivores, so they need meat protein, not plant protein, which is more difficult for them to digest/process. NVI foods have historically had less pea ingredients than lots of other foods so many people overlooked it because the peas are whole and easy to pick out. I see that they've now added pea protein to some of their Instinct LID foods, though, which is really too bad, particularly considering that those foods are not cheap! Pea protein is not the best way to boost protein numbers for a carnivore cat!

I think a lot of this is to make foods sound healthier to humans: lots of pet food sites have photos of meat and produce and it all looks very appealing but it's certainly not the cats who are visiting the sites! And yes, rice is definitely a grain to my mind, too! (And apparently also to The Whole Grain Council!) In terms of carbs, I think rice is a bad idea, though it doesn't seem, at least anecdotally, to cause the sensitivities in cats that wheat and corn can.

All this said, there are certain cases where I'm not so against the use of produce. Primal, which both KittyKat184 KittyKat184 and I feed, contains small amounts of quite a few fruits and vegetables but they're used for their nutrients rather than for (plant-based) protein. We keep our cats on a very low-carb diet and Primal is pretty low in carbs so I'm okay with feeding it. The choice for certain nutrients, I guess, is either the produce Primal uses or chemical forms, which can have their own flaws. As always, feeding commercial cat food offers a complicated set of choices.

Lisahe, how do you get around the expense of buying Primal? My cats love it; they thrive on it, but it was digging a financial hole in my pocket. I was also feeding The Honest Kitchen Prowl but noticed it to have a lot of vegetables, fruits, calories, and carbs. Cats are carnivores.

Yes, I agree about Prowl, it's way too carby. As for affording Primal, I agree that it's expensive. I make sure to buy from the local stores that sell it for less. ($24.95 or $25.95 per large bag) Working at home means I'm lucky not to have many expenses for gas or work clothes so that helps a lot! Even so, I have been trying to cut back the cat food expenses a bit and have worked in some occasional Oma's Pride Purr food instead of Rad Cat for the afternoon snack. The cats love it but it has bone and they get plenty of that in their freeze-dried food. In the end, quite honestly, for these cats, what's cheapest is often what they eat best and they love Primal for some reason so it all gets eaten.
