Ever Heard Of A Cat Doing This?

My rescue I've had for about six months is doing great and seems fine but, I have noticed that occasionally he'll drag his butt across the carpet. I've seen dogs do this but never a cat. It's not a chronic thing and he'll do it about 8 to 12 inches and he stops. I've inspected his you know what and don't see any inflammation or anything out of the ordinary. It's not making a mess or anything. I'm not really to worried about it and he seems to be doing it less than at first but, just curious if anyone else has had this experience.

That would suggest to me he has some sort of irritation to his rear. I have a couple thoughts:

- Is he long haired? If so they can get "dingle berries" which the scoot their butt to clear off

- Has he been dewormed? Or does he go outside (aka does he have worms after being outside)?

- His anal sacs would be my last thought. Normally, they are expressed naturally during defecation. So is he having good quality stools? Even if he is, they can still have difficulty expressing their sacs naturally and you will need a vet to express them manually.

My male cats do this all the time, well, it feels like it's all the time, but usually they are grooming their back legs and butt area, then scoot on the rug. It drives me nuts, but there is nothing wrong with them, maybe it's easier to dry that way? Actually, I haven't seen our kitten do it, just the other male. My female only did this when she had a UTI as she was trying to "get it off her" or something. If it's happening chronically I would be concerned, but if it's just occasionally, I wouldn't give it much worry. As long as like the other poster mentioned, dewormed, dingle berries, and everything else is healthy.

He is a long hair and I thought about dingle berries. I haven't actually had him dewormed but he doesn't go outside and I've seen no sign of pin worms. He doesn't seem to be having any problems with bowel movements. He goes regularly and seem to be normal in size etc. I do remember the foster saying something about she hardly ever seen him poop but I've never had that problem since I've had him. They had a busy household and I think he was somewhat stressed there. It's quiet at my house and he doesn't seem stressed at all. It does happen with less frequency now so maybe it's something that is kind of straightening itself out. I plan on taking him to the vet soon for a check up and will talk to the vet about it. He's not due his shots yet and am trying to hold out till he is. Thanks for the reply!

I've never had a cat that done this so I just thought it was odd. He is usually grooming his hind legs when he does do it so, funny that you mention that. I really don't think it's anything to worry about honestly but, was just wondering about others experience with it and if it was somewhat common. Thanks for the info!

Cats can have impacted anal glands, the same as dogs. I would have the vet check it out.

Hi sabian. My cat Max was doing this awhile back and the vet said his anal glands were blocked. Once he expressed them Max stopped scooting.
