I am watching some science program, theories about the Bermuda Triangle.

Usually when a science show says "Don't try this at home" they don't show all the steps needed to happen to create the dangerous situation, to help stop copycats. You want to repeat it, you have to research it first. Well, this one didn't skip anything. They said "Don't try this at home, you could blow off your fingers" and half-filled a 2 liter bottle with dry ice, and attached a weight and dropped it in water. And after a time skip BOOM!!!

I still don't get how filling a bottle with too much carbon dioxide is testing what a methane bubble would do, but now I know how to make fantastic explosions with dry ice.

Now, let's see if anyone recognizes this story. I have the TV on, but I was in the kitchen making food and only hearing the TV. I was considering putting grilled chicken on a bun right when the previous show ended and a new show came on. So totally different sensory input than when I normally have the TV on. The next show was about Pompeii and a story I read decades ago and had totally forgotten about came to mind. It was a children's book, about a blind orphan in Pompeii that had a companion dog. "Blind" and "orphan" in that time means a street beggar and food was a big problem. I remember that when Mt. Vesuvius blew its top the dog managed to safely lead the boy to the docks and only when the kid was grabbed by someone with a boat did the dog turn and run back into Pompeii. What partially triggered the memory is that I was thinking about a bread product when the show came on and the final chapter of the book involved archaeologists excavating Pompeii and wondering why in all the chaos a dog died holding a loaf of bread in its mouth. Anyone else read this story?
Yes! It's called "The Dog of Pompeii" by Louis Untermeyer. I tried to find a copy of the story but this is this pdf is the best that I can come up with. The story starts on page 3.

Farm kids figured out a long time ago how to blow up a soda bottle with dry ice. . .a lot of small town gas stations/grocery stores won't sell it to minors anymore (maybe they do that in some cities too, idk). It's a good way to get school called off for a bomb scare or blow someone's mailbox all out of shape :/.

Watching What On Earth?, this one involved a redacted photo. If I were to ever have Bill Gates' money and technical pool to call on, I know what I would do. I'd put up a couple of satellites taking photos and direct feed to the internet. All those governments that think hiding stuff is them making the best decision about us for us, nope. If it's visible from space, everyone will see it. And then I'd start backwards engineering what we do know about Tesla's stuff and modify his free electricity dream into a free internet dream. Anyone can hook in from anywhere, bypassing government filters.

Sigh, keep dreaming. Maybe I better add this one to the post-bucket list, possess someone who has the money and know-how to give him or her the desire to do it. I'll squeeze it in between seeing what happened to the fifth gas giant and seeing what happened to the crew of the Marie Celeste.

WoW beautiful shot! Also great for three threads! Show me your eyes, Show me your "stink eyed" cat pictures!! Show Us The Whiskers
I wish I did not live across the country from you or you would have Patrick on your doorstep. He is a special needs cat in that he needs a big dose of laxative every day so he can poop and L-tyrosine (a non-essential amino acid that helps make melanine, which is what makes him black, available at health food stores) so he stays black instead of turning brown and orange, otherwise he is healthy, 5 years old, indoor-only, semi-long bunny-fur that does not mat, no bad manners, gets along with other cats but is very shy about strangers. I have fostered him for a very long time but nobody wants him and I just can't do it anymore. He's been on Petfinders with not a single person inquiring about him. Do you know anyone in Southern California who might want him? I may have to put him down if nobody wants him.

Aren't there pet rescues that will foot the bill for transporting an animal under circumstances like these?

I have a kitten! :D This is Toad. She's a very sweet and loving but mischievous and playful kitty. Toad has problems with her eyes and can't see very well because of an infection when she was a tiny kitten. Per the vet, this is as good as her eyes are going to get. It doesn't seem to slow her down, though! She came from the shelter where I work and is with me as foster-to-adopt.

OMG! I have a little gray boy named Jasper who is just like her! He's missing one eye and the other is scarred, just like hers. He's missing his left eye though. I should send him to you so you have a matched set :D. Anyway he seems to get around fine, the only thing I noticed is that his depth perception isn't so great. Other than that he seems to be able to see all that he needs to see. So I think she'll be just fine. Have fun!

It could be sinuses. I had a horrible cough two years ago, everyone figured I had pneumonia. Turned out my lungs were fine and the cough was triggering itself, but there was also a sinus infection going on that made the cough in the first place.
When I was a kid every time I'd get a cold I'd end up coughing for a month or two afterwards. A nerve in my throat would get irritated from the coughing when I still had the cold, which would trigger more coughing even when there was no reason for it. I had so many TB tests, because teachers and principals simply couldn't believe my explanation. However, I was right about the cause and never failed one of the TB tests.

I can't manage cough syrup -- the flavor is always too strong for me -- but eventually I discovered dextromethorphan, which is (or at least used to be) available over the counter and which suppresses that kind of coughing (though not, for some reason, productive coughing). It helps immensely. Not that I'm recommending it for cats; I've no idea how it would affect them, nor do I know whether it's available in an appropriate dosage.

Wishing cats came with LCD displays indicating whether they're sick or not. (I wish kids came with them too!)
And coworkers. And fellow commuters. And people at the mall. And...

Aren't there pet rescues that will foot the bill for transporting an animal under circumstances like these?
I seem to recall that there's a volunteer group who will transport cats across country by car, relay style. I don't remember their name, though. Anyone?

Are you on Facebook? There's some rescues and pet transport-there's been quite a bit of crossposting of special needs pets. Post his photo here and his bio=age/likes/dislikes etc and medical stuff. I will share on my facebook as there IS pet transport that will help as well as sharing the post. I have a couple friends who work with Blind Cat Sanctuary and could share the post for me-then your kitty will get the exposure to find a new home.

Unfortunately my home is indoor/outdoor so I wouldn't want to bring in a cat and worry about him running away=my home is basically a barn for cats=we have special window shelves to go out the window-Honeybee. Pumps stays in the backyard=sleeps in the sun all day or at least she will until November..so I don't want to bring a cat in who is not used to the outdoors...my goal was to find another indoor/outdoor cat for Honeybee. She grooms pumps but pumps doesn't like it=have no clue why. Floey used to rub up against her..Jon saw Honeybee rub up against pumpkin face the other day and she brought Pumps a mole which Jon sent on it's way before it could get farther in the house. Pumps is 14 and I haven't been as proactive about bringing in another cat only because I work long hours and so far just haven't had the time to network and find a new kitty=I would have to do a meet and great with Honeybee..some cats she likes..some she doesn't..

I have a friend who loves blowing up a watermelon..he says it gets vaporized and not a piece left...he didn't tell me his trick-I suspect it's dynamite. He loves to blow up stuff..and I didn't know that about dry ice-that looks fun..but then again I have always been strange tomboy girl anyways.

Pumpkin Face=she got her first Flovent session this morning-she didn't like the mask on her face-but she let me leave it on for 5 breathes=plus she's got a cold-poor thing looks miserable..I gave her pills, eye ointment and forgot the lysine AGAIN..ugg. I put it in her tuna as she wont let me syringe it=she HATES anything forced in mouth. I don't know if I should ask vet for antibiotics but for now she's eating and drinking. I gave more water than usual in her syringe this morning to help with her cold. Wiped her eyes and nose. That didn't go over well. She really hates being poked at but she won't fight or bite. Jon said she spent most of the day outside yesterday sleeping on the deck in the sunshine.

Maybe you could start a separate thread in the SOS forum about this? More people would probably see it.

Went shopping at Salvation army yesterday- 50% off everything except for yellow tags.

They Finally marked down a few books and they were also half off...guess I have to pop in once a week to see if there's any deals. I told the cashier that I haven't been here in 6 months due to rise in prices-she said yes they won't budge on the 80% off list price but someone came up with the idea to mark some $.99. I said I can go a mile up the street and get the same or better condition book for 50 cents. So finally they are coming around-guess they have too many books. The only ones that sell are ones that resell on amazon for $7 and up because most books are $4 a piece.

I got some long sleeve that new fabric that wicks sweat-it really helps keep the sweat from making you wet. So strange I was only able to find a few shirts-guess no one gives them up! One was 50 cents! hahaha! I took most of the stuff I bought at Wal-Mart back now that I found cheaper duds. My mail order stuff came in. Most of the stuff I bought on Amazon way too small or didn't like the material so those get sent back. The socks I ordered online go back too..I need wide topped socks-most are for skinny people..my ankles are too big for even sandals. I refuse to pay the prices at the overpriced sports stores.
The Gore tex coat I bought actually fit-snug but If I don't gain more weight it will be fine. I plan to ride my bike until we get snow.

So today I have a long sleeve shirt as it's chilly coming down the hills.

I get a flu shot every year. When I was woking in the hospital, it was a requirement. If you did not get one, you had to wear a mask when seeing patients.
When I worked for the mental hospital in Tennessee, I got EVERYTHING you can think of. We had to TB test annually, got hepatitis shots, flu shots, pneumonia shots. If there was a vaccine for it, we were required to take it. We were an acute care hospital, so we got everyone they found in bad shape anywhere.

It's called "The Dog of Pompeii" by Louis Untermeyer.
That was a lovely and touching little story! Thanks for sharing!

Yes, there are several on FB. I am in touch with two of them regularly. I can be PM'ed if a link is needed.

Dang, I really wish I could figure out how to link to FB videos with proper sizing. Someone put out a box for their cat that was teeny. Think the box that a bottle of ibuprofen fits in, and I'm not talking econo-size. Maybe 2"x2"x3". The cat put his foot in it, pulled his foot out, stuck his nose in, lifted his head, and then put his foot back into it and lay down on top of it. Someone had subtitled the cat's thoughts, and the comments were both fitting and funny.
