Cat With Neurological Damage Hasn’t Peed

So this is not so much asking for advice, it’s more a discussion to hear other people’s thoughts on the situation.

As some of you know I adopted a special needs kitty yesterday.
When I adopted her I was well aware of her health issues so I’m not at all “surprised” by this.

They told me they were expressing her bladder twice a day for a few days when she first arrived at the shelter because she wasn’t peeing. The day I adopted her they had stopped and when I met her she had peed one time just a little in her box at the shelter. This was yesterday around 3pm.
Since then she has no peed at all.
She’s had access to water and knows where the litter box is.
She’s had 3 cans of wet cat food and a little dry cat food.
She pooped a few hours ago.

I attempted to express her bladder but she is still settling in and wasn’t willing to cooperate enough for me to do it.

I’m giving her tomorrow to go before taking her in on Monday.


She walks okay, however still stumbles here and there.
She’s able to Jump up on the bed and bay window much to our disapproval.


Any thoughts on the situation, like I said she will be going to see the Vet. Regardless if she pees or not.

Hi Elena, sounds as if you have a lucky cat there, to be adopted by you...

Re the pee-ing, how long can cats safely go without peeing? I think I often read about how important if was to address cats not peeing - and asap often. eg if boy cats get plugged "down there"

If Im remembering about this correctly, not peeing can quickly becomes an emergency.. if not always, certainly at times! Should you ring a vet quickly, as soon as possible, just in case? Ahead of your vet visit...It would be awful if it possibly quickly escalated into an emergency...!

I know you weren't looking for advice, but I personally would ring a vet (ASAP), explain everything and take it from there.....then at the least you know how long it is OK/safe it is for a cat not to have pee-d! Sorry, I cant help further as I dont really know much about this sort of thing.. Another reason I think it wld be good it you talked to a vet

Does the litter box you currently have set up for her have sides that are lower than 2.5-3 inches tall? If her leg(s) were injured, and her rib(s) too, it may just hurt --at least a bit-- to lift her legs over a 3-5 inch side of a normal litter box to get into the box. That spasm of pain may be keeping her from peeing more often (in addition to needing help with peeing like having you expressing her bladder). You may have to cut down the sides of her box, as she is recovering from her injuries. Or use a puppy pee pad?

Also, I think if you just brought her home yesterday, she is likely still stressed out. Stress and/or fear can certainly make a cat hold their pee! About a month ago, my cat had leg surgery and the nurses said she hadn't peed the entire time there (approx 30+ hours), despite all the fluids and everything! She was just too stressed. When we got her home, she peed large like the state of Texas in her box, then peed like the state of Hawaii (little spots everywhere like islands!) all over the floor of her crate, lol. Poor kid.

But definitely see how today goes, be ready for anything, and keep in contact with the vet (which it already sounds like you are doing that).

Hi guys!
Yesterday she did poop but as noted had no luck urinating.
I haven’t been in to see her this morning (sleeps with my mom).
The sides aren’t to tall however I do agree that peeing being painful may be the cause.

In theory Cats can go as long as 72 hours without peeing but obviously that isn’t advisable.
My goal is to take her to my normal veterinarian tomorrow morning (Monday) as they are closed today.
Worst case I need to take her to the emergency hospital however I would like to avoid the stress of it if I can.

She pooped and peed again!
Yay!
Yay for proper digestion!

She’s eating GREAT and really settling in well. Right now she’s eating different canned foods and has access to a mixed dry food. It’s a mix of Simply Nourish and Evo.


I’m trying to decide if I want to put her on the wysong natural urinary health food or switch her to raw.

We will have to see.
