Hello everyone!
I have an interesting case this time. I wasn't so sure about fostering again since poor Dewey, but I think I've found a cat that could really use my help.
Her name is Penny. She is 1 year old and has already had a litter. I'm extremely pro-spay/neuter, and only a few weeks ago did her kittens find homes. She is already pregnant again, and it's already quite noticeable as she is a very small cat! (One of the smallest I've seen actually!) She's incredibly sweet, and she does have an owner who treats her more like a puppy than a cat. Because of that, she has great temperament. I picked her up today for some cuddles and she liked my nose! She is more than precious. Anyway, her owner asked if I wanted to take her home. I said yes, of course, but she isn't with me yet.
When I do get her, I want to return her to her owner, but there's a catch. I don't want her getting pregnant again as it's hard enough to find homes for kittens in the rural area I live in. Last litter, she had a whopping 6 kittens. I want to spay her and then return her after the kittens have weaned and she has healed. Her owner has three little children who don't really know how to handle animals properly, and their mother doesn't care how they do it. She has gotten them rabbits and will let them take them onto their trampoline and jump with them on it! Im sure she wouldn't let them if she had researched more on rabbits and how sensitive they are to scary situations like that. But I feel out of place to try and tell her she's doing it all wrong. Even if I just gently urged her to research bunnies, she might get offended, I believe.
Anyway, back to Miss Penny. I'm worried she won't want me to spay her, and that she actually wants her to have more kittens. I don't think she realizes how huge the cat population is, either. I'm a bit nervous in real life, and I am for sure going to ask her before I spay her cat, of course, but I wanted to ask the TCS community for any tips or advice they can give me about this, what to say, what extra I can do for tiny Penny while I have her, and possibly how I could encourage her to teach her kids how to properly handle their bunnies. (And maybe how to clean a cage? lol) All preferably in the least offensive way I could possibly put it. I was thinking of asking her to "come to work with me" one of these upcoming days so she can see how tightly packed our shelter already is with cats and kittens so I can enlighten her. I feel it would be a good idea to educate the people in the surrounding areas how important it is to fix your cats. Unfortunately, more than most could care less, and just don't seem to understand the gravity of the matter. Any ideas for spreading awareness? Any and all help is appreciated! Thank you!

I suggest you make picture "books" for the children. Use card stock for the pages since the children are young. Make a book about bunnies and another book about cats and kittens. Punch holes and tie the pages of the books together with strong yarn.

Find pictures of bunnies, cats, and kittens that you can print out or cut out and glue on the pages. Include pictures of children.

Write stories about how happy the bunnies are when their keepers do all the things for them that bunnies love, including cleaning their hutch.

Write about how sad the bunnies are when they are frightened. Write about how proud the children are when their bunnies are happy and safe.

Do the same for the cat/kitten book, incorporating the "messages" you want to impart on each page.

Present the books as gifts.

Offer to take mom and kids on a shelter tour. Discuss what they will see before the tour, and discuss the issues after the tour.

Include a discussion about "fixing" cats so they can stop having babies.

See if you can arrange a free spay for mama kitty after she has her kittens so she can "retire".

:)

That's a great idea! Thanks Sarthur.
Spays aren't free but they're not incredibly pricey here either, so I'll pay for it and return her after she's healed for about a week just to avoid any incidents. Hopefully she'll understand after I've shown her around the shelter!

The book is a great idea ! I think def show her around the shelter and how difficult it is to re home kittens and just remind her it is unhealthy for a cat to have too many kittens ; especially with being so small

I love finding fun ways to spread the word without offending anyone. They're are some really funny memes and pictures I've seen, as well as jokes like "Dogs can't add and cats can't subtract but both can multiply! Please spay and neuter to prevent over-population". I liked the one of a cat dressed up like Darth Vader that said "I am not you're father because I was neutered".

I like the picture book ideas, as well as just stating plain facts and numbers (how many get put down, how many are born, how many are homeless, how many are in shelters, ect).

I would bring it up in a way that benefits Miss Penny, not her owner. Tell her that the mating of cats is very rough and many cats get hurt during the process.Since Penny is so small she is likely to get a chunk bit out of her neck where they hold her down, or get hurt. That her small size makes it difficult for her to continue to support healthy pregnancies, and the risk of her dying trying to give birth is increased., especially if a kitten is bigger than normal. That mammary cancer is increased with her not being spayed, and that annoying constant meowing and wanting outside when in heat will be eliminated. If SHE had to find a home fro all those kittens it might be different. Tell her she should be involved in finding homes for them and see if that helps! Make sure you remind her that three and maybe even four litters are possible and with her record, probable. Good luck, I really hope all turns out well for that precious feline.

Hey all! Just thought I'd update with a picture. It wasn't taken by me, so excuse the blur ;) that's tiny Penny with her best friend Pookie. My best estimation is that she'll have 4 kittens, maybe less. Can't wait to take her home! I miss having kittens!

I love the idea of a picture book. Instead of just random pictures, maybe take pictures of the actual animals in your shelter. Then, when they tour the shelter, they'll see the real animals from their book. If you have a color printer, they'll print out fairly decently, or maybe your local library can help with the printing. Maybe a momento of the tour could be a picture of each child with their favorite real animal at the shelter to add to their book.

If mom isn't overly excited about the tour, maybe their school or day care would love to make a class trip out of it. School and peer pressure is still pretty strong with kids. They'll go home chattering at mom about what they learned in school and saw on their field trip. And often want to do it at home, especially if the teacher reinforces it. This is why my sister has been living a life of no sweets in her house for the past two weeks. lol

So I won't get Penny, since my friend moved.
But I did get this lovely lady today 20170813_002316.jpg
I don't know what to call her yet, so if you have any suggestions I'd love to hear them! She came with a sad story. They say they found her months ago on a pile of dead kittens, and now she's pregnant again. It's hard to tell how far along she is, to me it seems she's had many litters before. I can feel the babies. Not moving yet, but her mammary glands are pretty swollen. I think she seems a bit small to be too close to her birth day, unless of course she's only having a couple. I swore I could feel more than two heads! So we'll wait and see. I've already prepared her a place to eat and rest, where I'm hoping she'll decide is safe enough to birth. Anyways, here are a couple pictures:
The lighting isn't great in any of them, as she was brought to me during the evening, but maybe someone has an idea of how much longer she has. My best guess is anywhere from 1-3 weeks. She's a small cat.

She's eating wet and dry kitten food here. Loved it.
She is so sweet, I'm already in love. :lovecat2:

Bless your heart, she is lovely! I wish you both the very best, she deserves someone like you to show her what love really is. When I saw her I thought she looked like an 'Anna'. No matter what you decide to call her, she is very lucky indeed!

Were you ever able to impart any information to the mom and her children regarding how to treat the pregnant cat and her kittens?

Mama is lactating, she's been leaking a bit all morning.
There was no milk last night.

I think I'm just gonna have to bring her to the vet! I feel like I'm driving myself wild, can't decide if she's close or not. She just isn't that big, but she's leaking enough to feed an elephant. Maybe she's only having one. I'm sure this isn't her first, second, or even third time doing this pregnancy thing. Time will tell I suppose.
