This question comes on the back of me only recently coming to the (obvious) realisation that “meat is meat” and that when I’ve been told (by the pet shops themselves!) that the pet shops around me here only stock raw food for dogs – well, that really also means that they stock raw food for cats too seeing as they’re the same thing! (Yes, major facepalm moment when I worked that one out!)

I don’t know about the pet shops around where you all live but, here anyway, they cater far more to dogs than they do to cats and so my question is –

What doggy things can our kitties use?

Toys/food/treats…

Do you buy anything in the “dog” version that saves you money? Does your cat steal your dog’s favourite toy? – and if so, which toy is it? Whether you have a dog or not, does your cat have a favourite “dog” chew..?

What pet shop supplies are safe for dogs and cats to share? (Or even share with other pets...) :banana1:

I buy Bravo chicken treats in the dog size bags for my cats. They are cheaper to buy in the larger size and the exact same as the ones marketed for cats.

Years ago one of our cats stole a pink bear from our dog. It is Jake's ( our cat) favorite toy. He carries it around in his mouth and "kills" it each time. It is so funny to see. Our large dog also likes to steal the cat toys!

Fortunately the pet stores we go to have just as many choices for cats as dogs, (raw food included). We never intentionally bought dog toys for Neely but she would drink from the dog's bowl, not hers, play with his toys, not hers, and even stole his dog bed. We never bought chews, instead our dog preferred Nylabones which was the one thing Neely did not touch. :nono: Both Neely and our dog have since gone to the Bridge but I wouldn't doubt she's stealing his toys up there too.

Cats and dogs have dramatically different dietary requirements. Cats require far more protein than dogs; cats require an abundance of the amino acid Taurine, and unlike dogs, cats cannot manufacture vitamin A from beta carotene; dogs have no need of arachidonic acid, but cats require it daily - the list goes on and on, but the bottom line is this: if you don't have a minimum of a PhD or DPhil in Animal Nutrition and a PostDoc in a Feline Dieticianary discipline, raw diets for cats present far more dangers than they do benefits. The average person has a far better chance of performing a successful heart transplant using a surgeon's manual and a butter knife than he or she does in preparing a complete diet for a cat from scratch.

Excellent thread.

My cat Milly loves to attack certain squeaker toys that are "meant" for dogs.

This raccoon in particular (here's a link via amazon)-

Since we name all of Milly's toys (where is the facepalm smiley  ), we named this one, "Roscoe".

You forgot to add, that cats are also more, uhh erhm, discerning than dogs!

Yes, very good point. I should’ve specified that although I was saying cats can eat raw food that’s marketed as dogs’ raw food – that absolutely does not mean to say that it should be their whole diet.

I will be looking into those Bravo treats though - I like the idea of a bigger bag for cheaper. :agree:

These stories are all so cute! :redheartpump: – The dog toy suggestions are great! - I’ve tried one or two dog toys for my cat as he’s a bit of a chewer – I haven’t quite found the right one yet but I will! – I do find though that sometimes the rubber ones seem to have a bit of a stronger smell than the cat toys which I wonder maybe is off-putting for a cat.

The racoon is great - I see in the description it says it "hones prey instinct" - I'm trying to get my Scraggles to play more so that could be something to look into! :greenpaw:

Last year I got some of the small "peep" branded easter toys on clearance after Easter for Aya my bunny-hunting cat. I had to remove the squeakers as they scared her but that gave me the opportunity to sew in a huge dose of catnip. She's since shredded them.

The only dog food you could feed to a cat is Nature's Variety Instinct Originals canned dog food. The formula is the exact same one as the cat formula.

100% freeze dried meat treats for dogs can be fed to a cat. Many brands use the same treat for both dogs and cats, just a different package and treat size. PureBites is one example.

Dog beds, blankets, etc can be used by cats.

My cat loves freeze dried treats so have been trying to give him them rather than the Dreamies that I was giving him - must look into the cost difference, if there is one, between the dog and cat ones.

Purebites freeze dried chicken for dogs is $3.99 for a 1.4 oz bag at Chewy.com

The same treats for cats in a slighty smaller 1.09 oz bag is $4.13 at Chewy.com

The 3 oz bag for dogs isn't too much more than the cat 1.09 oz bag, $7.35

Dog treats tend to be larger in size so you just break them up into smaller pieces for a cat. You can get twice the amount of treats from a dog bag

Where my cats are
I wish my cats liked freeze dried treats! I'm going to mention it to my Mom. We both use treats to encourage our seniors to eat.

Over the years we've had a few dog toys the cats have claimed. I bought Noodles a pink stuffed pig because she used to steal a stuffed bunny my Mom had given me. It wasn't furry or anything; but she would carry it around the house. She didn't like the pig nearly as much. :rolleyes2:

When one of Mom's cats was a kitten he thought he was part dog. He played with the dogs and would wrestle the dogs tennis ball and every now and then one of their stuffed toys. He still gives Mom's remaining dog baths and steals her bed. He always sat for treats with the dogs and raised his paw; so I'm thinking he would be inclined to go for those freeze dried treats if he thinks hes getting what the dog gets.

I'm surprised that my cat likes the freeze-dried treats as much as he does, to be honest, as he’s a bit of a dry food addict and not a big wet food fan. It’s because he likes them as much as he does that I’m trying to introduce a bit more raw into his diet to see how that goes, which is what brought me to the raw dog/cat food discovery! :yummy:

That’s adorable about your mom’s cat – I’m toying with the idea of trying to teach my Scraggles how to sit on command – he’s very much his own man, though, so I’m not too sure how successful I’d be..!
