Some weeks have passed since dustydiamond alerted me regarding this story. I was busy at the time and my neurones not being anymore what they used to be I had forgotten all about it. The advantage has been that I have been able to read it all at once. I have fallen in love with little June Bug and would very much enjoy to hear about any new recent developments in her life and her relationship with Makena and Lilia.

This thread has surprised me with the number of views and "likes" generated. So I guess I will continue on....

June Bug is growing FAST

Where she was once a quite clearly a kitten, she is now more of a small cat. June Bug's kitten blue eyes have turned a pretty gold color, and her short legs are being replaced by the long slim legs of an adolescent cat

June Bug will be in quarantine until sometime in August when she can be retested for FIV. We get her out every day the weather permits. We also spend quite a bit of time in the bathroom playing with her. June Bug LOVES to play and it has become difficult to use our bathroom for its intended purpose without being assaulted by a playful kitten. It took us some time to train her not to bite and claw our hands and ankles. Those kitten teeth are sharp! During this learning period using the bathroom was so treacherous we named her "velocikitten" after the fearsome velociraptor's in Jurassic park! Thankfully she has learned what "No!" means.

If any one picture could sum up June Bug at this time.....

June Bug's stumbling kitten trot has turned into a Cheetah-like-speed-of-light-zip! She loves to race.

When we sit by our pond in the evenings, June Bug is still careful to remain close by. She stays within about twenty feet of us while she plays and explores.

I usually research anything that interests me, so by now I would normally have read up on a kittens stages of development and cognitive progress etc. I have not done this with June Bug, I just want to see it unfold and enjoy each moment as it occurs. However, my wife and I have kept an informal weekly journal of fun things that we notice changing.

So I wonder how long it will be before we can't trust her to stay close by. I would like to think she will just always stay right near us, but I suspect that she will eventually want to wander further than we are comfortable with. To that end June Bug is being harness trained.

We don't suspect June Bug will test positive for FIV in August. A positive result would be statistically unlikely in her case. However, we do occasionally talk about what we would do if she did test positive, and try to form a plan. We would be quite upset to say the least.

One thing is very clear, June Bug is growing into a beautiful cat.

About another week until June Bug gets her final check that will get her free of quarantine. She is getting bigger by the day and she eats and drinks more than both Lilia and Makena together.

What is this thing?

She idolizes Makena and follows him whenever she can. Neither can understand why the aren't allowed to play together.

Thankfully Makena is very obedient and listens to us when we tell him to keep away from June Bug

June Bug now knows her name. She also understands the word "no," but she is still too rambunctious to reliably do as told. June Bug keeps herself occupied with her growing pile of toys in the bathroom and we still get her out every day. She plays until she is exhausted and panting, rests, then starts playing again. We play with her in the bathroom as often as we can.

In a week we hope she passes her blood test and can come out of the bathroom, join the other cats and (finally) play with Makena.

Just a few weeks ago, June Bug was abandoned in some underbrush in the rain. Cold and unlikely to survive until morning, I scooped her up and brought her inside. With June Bugs unknown feral history, she has remained in the quarantine of our bathroom until she could pass her FELV/FIV tests.

Just a few weeks ago...

Deb and I have never been able to talk about what we would do if June Bug tested positive after her quarantine. We have tried, but we always ended up with no plan, just an indefinite "lets hope for the best." I sort of had a vague idea that she could move into my shop, maybe get another kitten that tested positive to keep her company. Or maybe find a shelter that takes FELV/FIV postive cats..... each scenario left me feeling ill. My wife and I have fallen in love with her.

June bug is a smart, happy, fun loving kitten that loves attention. She deserves a life of interaction with other cats and people.

60 days have passed, June Bug had her final tests for FELV/FIV this morning.

She sat calmly on her ride to the vet. Occasionally seeking my hand for reassurance.

She was well behaved as she waited for Dr Rene to see her

June Bugs tests came back negative.
She is now out of quarantine and joyously racing around the house playing with Makena.

Makena is patient and gentle with her.

Our other Bengal, Lilia, hisses and runs away from June Bug. Lilia has had some tough times in her life, so we expect her to take some time to get used to the tiny orange terror of June Bug zipping around.

We renovated our house with cats in mind: there are lots of fun cat-friendly places to discover. This small window seat in the library really caught June Bugs attention...

Deb and feel like a weight has been lifted from us. June Bug can now eat with the big cats, use the big cat litter box, and has lots of room to race around. Being out and about with people other cats is a new chapter in her kitten life. I suspect there will be much hilarity and some great pictures to capture.

June Bug has just now followed me upstairs to my small office. As I write this, she is by my feet playing with the toy mouse Dr Rene gave her. But for a touch of luck, her life could have ended on a rainy night just a few weeks ago. But for the result of a few tests, her life could have been constricted to quarantine and slated to be end in a few short years. With all this in mind, I find myself acutely aware of how much I enjoy her company.

That's great news! I was hoping she would be negative. I bet you two are relieved to be able to have June Bug running around.
