I am in the early stages of home cooking for my 6 cats. I have started with chicken thighs and am using EZ Complete. So far about 50% of the cats like it. I am still mixing it into their canned food. At first 4 of them just loved it. Now one is starting to turn up his nose as we gradually add more of the home cooked.

My cats love fish based food. I know this is not great for them, but for years they have eaten Wellness Turkey and Salmon or Wellness Whitefish and Chicken. They all love plain cooked chicken, but when mixed with the EZ complete some of the cats will just not touch it.

I am beginning to think about and want to try another protein. I would love to add a salmon or white fish. Has anyone done home cooking with fish? I have found very little resources.

I do plan to try pork as well. Beef is out as one of my boys cannot eat beef. He vomits all over the place.

I would love any advice on trying some fish with home cooked and EZ complete.

Thanks!

You might get them to eat it just by adding fish oil, unless that supplement already has it. I'm not familiar with the mixes. I have to break open at least 30 of those capsules into the boys' mix every month. I think orange&white orange&white just gives her cats fishies during the week without using the oil. I personally feed mine bone in ground rabbit and some turkey thigh chopped into little chunks and do the taurine, vitamin B, salt, fish oil... I think that's it.
I've read through catinfo.org at least 9 times since my alpha was actually ill getting blockages. He gets Cranberry Relief in his raw twice a week even though he's already had the PU surgery I'm trying to keep his pH down and his bladder lining healthy. He has FLUTD. He was on the diet for almost 3 months and it was down to 7 from 8. Then he got the surgery and I started giving it to him as soon as he got home.

I'm new to homemade food too and am having some of the same struggles getting one of our cats to eat it consistently.

I use Dr. Pierson's recipe, which has fish oil in it, and cook it all the way for now, and he still turns his nose up. I've tried Parmesan cheese and crushed kibble on top, but what works best is freeze dried salmon crumbs. His ears perk up when he hears me grab the bag, and once I put a little on he digs right in.

I don't remember where, but when I was researching homemade cat food I read somewhere that fish isn't recommended because then they won't eat other proteins.

Yes, I rotate sardines, salmon and mackerel, canned in water instead of using fish oil supplement. I either do "Fish Sunday" where the two cats split 3-4 oz of fish...or if I'm making a new batch of food on Sunday, I'll mix the 3-4 oz of fish into their food instead of feeding it separately. They go through 80 ounces of food per week, so 3-4 ounces of fish is an insignificant percentage of their diet, but it does get some Omega 3's into them.

Using the salmon crumbles is a great idea! I tried it tonight and everyone ate all of the chicken!! Thank you for the idea.
I think it really is best to stay away from fish as that is all they will want to eat.

I will go with pork as the next protein and then re examine what other protein source I will try. I am intrigued with rabbit!

Hooray!

I've thought about using salmon oil in my recipe instead of the generic fish oil I've been using, to see if that appeals to Snickers more.

Let me know how the pork goes!
