Oh, I thought since a tablet is bigger, you'd be using more of your fingers.
I guess it depends upon the screen size.
It depends on the screen size for me. On my phone I mostly use my thumbs, but on my tablet I use more fingers.

I just got a tablet this past weekend. I have only used the onscreen keyboard. It is an Android. The intuitive thing doesn't work the same way as my phone. When I start typing a word it gives options in a box and I can touch one of the options and it fills in the rest of the word. I usually forget about the options and type in the whole word. My phone fills in and corrects words, of course with odd words and acronyms I want the incorrect word not the 'right' word. I don't use my phone much for other than calls and texts because the screen is so small. I don't have navigation on my car so I have used the internet for directions or an address but that is about it.

Way back when, on the Palm Pilot, I actually paid good money for the FITALY on-screen keyboard, which is optimized for one-finger typing. (The Fitaly One-Finger Keyboard) I would very happily buy it again, for my Android devices, but they currently offer it only for Apple devices. :sigh: This is the best solution I've ever seen for on-screen typing.

Given that I can't get FITALY, I just use the on-screen keyboards. On my phone, I rather like the GO keyboard, because of the various skins that are available for it, but there are some characters that aren't available on it, ñ for instance.

Whenever possible I turn off predictive typing as I find it too distracting. As for auto-correct, don't get me started.

If I could find a good Bluetooth keyboard that isn't too large (I'd like to shove it in a bag to take along to my computer club, for instance), at a good price, I'd grab it. But it would need a very good guarantee. The one time I found something that I actually bought, the key mechanism was shoddy, the design seemed to be intended to mess up touch typists, and then it wouldn't work with my phone. Fortunately, it did come with a good guarantee.

Thanks, denice denice . Browsing some threads, it was you and other members, that gave me the idea of getting a tablet.
I want one for the portability, and bringing it outside, during the summer, to be able to read various things.
But I couldn't figure out, how all you members typed so quickly on your tablets.
So your post really helps.

When you went looking for your tablet, was it screen size, battery life, or internal memory and processing speed that made you decide what to get? I'm hopefully looking for one under $250 CAD.

Thanks Margret. I've never heard of a Fitaly one-finger keyboard. Fascinating. I've only ever used the Qwerty keyboard.
And that GO keyboard App looks to be a lot of fun.
I thought that maybe people were using a silicone roll-up keyboard for portability, but I've never tried one.

IDK if you'll find one under $350 unless you go refurbished or used. At least not one with a big screen. I prefer android because of its flexibility, (usualy) expandable memory, and lower price.

I have a Galaxy tab 10.5 and I really like it

A combination of things. It is a large enough screen for me and it was $249.00. It is supposed to last 13 hours on a full charge. It is also the same operating system as my phone so I didn't have to learn something different. I am a very casual user so I don't care about internal memory or processing speed.

I have a Galaxy Tab A with the 9.7 inch screen. It was $50 off this past weekend. I got it at Best Buy though. I know there are cheaper places. I am not a techie type person so I usually go to Best Buy where I can get someone who is a techie type to help me.

Wow, yours look great but is definitely out of my price range. I prefer new, not refurb or used, since I had some refurb products before, and they did not last.

I do want android. This is the one I'm thinking of:
Tell me what you think.

I got a 10.1 Tab A at Costco on sale before Christmas, I forget how much exactly. But it's on sale on Amazon right now for under $250:
Amazon Warehouse can have some really good prices on open box products. Nothing wrong with them, not even used, just the box got bashed or it was a return (unwanted not broken) or something like that.

If you go with an open box product on Amazon, protect yourself! Use PayPal (they insist that people live up to their guarantees), make sure that the vendor has a good reputation, and verify the guarantee before you buy. A "bashed" box can mean a damaged product inside the box.

I once worked at a store where we designed and put together custom computers for our clients. One computer we made was a state-of-the-art graphics machine for a professional photographer. Very expensive computer -- top notch display, huge hard drive, etc.. We shipped it FedEx. When it arrived the box was damaged, but the client figured that made no difference; it wasn't the box he was buying, after all. Then he tried to turn the computer on. :argh::censored::livid: It was totally inoperative. A closer examination of the tower (the metal enclosure around the drives and circuit boards -- the heart of the computer) revealed a dent, from the inside! The only explanation we could think of was that it had fallen while being loaded into the cargo plane (it would have required a fall from a considerable height to have caused that kind of damage) and the hard drive had broken loose and slammed against the enclosure at high speed. We eventually got FedEx to honor their warranty, but we had to jump through hoops to do so.

That is the same one that I just got at Best Buy for $249.

I'm probably too trusting of Amazon :paperbag:. They say they have an A-to-Z guarantee. . .;). So far I haven't bought any electronics from Warehouse Deals, just a hamster cage and a dog crate. Which were both honestly and accurately described. But, yes, verifying all of that is the smarter thing to do, lol.

That is the same one that I just got at Best Buy for $249.
Good to know! Anyone who wants one at that price won't have to wait for shipping :cool2:.

I have the iPad Air 2. Best thing I ever bought. About the size of a small thin book. Backlit so don't have to worry about a reading light at night. So light to hold, which I love. Can't say one thing negative about it. Will never buy a laptop again.

Personally I don't care for Apple os. Also you can't add memory. If you just do email and browsing it's okay but it's no gaming tablet.

If you do a lot of online gaming like I do you need the extra memory because gaming apps are huge.

When you say memory, do you mean storage?

No clue what an sd card is, but I can definitely buy more storage on my iPad.
An sd card stands for 'secure digital' memory card. It's about the size of a stamp, and is used in digital cameras, computers or cell phones.
These tiny memory cards are often used to store photos, movies, music, or basically any file that your normal computer would have.

Think of it, as a small plastic stamp, which can be placed inside an sd card port, or reader, to gain access to the files it contains. Just a storage device, really, that you can use to transfer files, or store files on. If you have an sd port, then you can expand the size of your internal memory, or storage.
