Awww... glad to hear he loves the harness! Not all cats take to walks, so it's great that Cheddarwurst does! Do you have him on flea, tick, and heartworm preventatives? These are necessary for all cats going outside, even if they're safe on their harness. Also, I've heard that some cats get so excited about going for walks that they might try to dart out the door. One good piece of advice I've heard to prevent this is putting the harness and leash on your cat, and then carrying them out the door, so that they associate the start of a walk with being carried out the door, and will be less likely to run out the door before you are prepared for a walk.

Yeah I didn't know if I should get a flea collar for him or if I should get the stuff you apply to them. I live smack in the middle of the desert so not a lot of ticks or fleas but I still want to keep him safe.

See what your vet recommends for Cheddarwurst. I know that Advantage and Frontline are popular brands. :)

He's about 8 years old and he's been all over the country! Moved with me to Boston (was naughty in Boston he didn't like the cold) to Nashville (he loved the music) to Cali (his cat nip fit right in) and now back to Texas! He's tuckered out from our walk and I'll be sleeping without a pillow because he's already claimed all of them for the night.

Oh I see...quite the worldly young man, Mr. Cheddarwurst is.  Orange Texan cats are the best (unless they're Aggies)...but I'm biased.   Hope you can get some zzzz's without a pillow.

Do you happen to know what causes his stomach problems? (That's not always easy to determine... we figured out our cat's stomach issue, which turned out to be potato, by chance. That's not a common problem but there are several other Cat Site members whose cats can't eat potato.)

My suggestion for weight control isn't so much a brand of food but an approach that our vet stresses: feed foods with lots of meat and low carbs. Check labels so you can avoid grains, potato, peas, tapioca, and similar ingredients and you're already off to a good start. Avoiding those ingredients can also help avoid the stomach issues, too, so you might find, as we did, that switching from dry food to wet and keeping the carbs very low calms Mister Cheddarwurt's gut, too.

Brands that are high-protein and low-carb vary from relatively cheap foods available at the grocery store -- like Fancy Feast Classics or Sheba -- to fairly expensive foods -- like Feline Natural or Tiki Cat -- that you'll only find a specialty stores. In between are brands like Weruva (thought watch out because some have potato), Nutro Natural Choice, or Rawz, a new one. Our cats' canned brands are Weruva, Tiki, Feline Natural, and occasional Nutro. Variety is good!

Good luck!

His stomach has been upset because he ate a leaf off a lily of peace plant which is a super irritant to kitties. He puked for two days but he's right back to normal now.

Glad you clarified that!  When you said he had a sensitive stomach, people start to suspect IBD or food allergies.

we're currently putting our Burmese baby on a diet. if I tell him enough times, the word will get through, it means, no you can't go finish Kai's meal just because he didn't want it - strict monitoring going on now. They get a bowl of wet food twice a day, virtually no treats, a very small handful of dry biscuits for supper to see them through the night,. Since we realised Kit was developing a pot belly, the diet has kicked in, about the time we went to daylight saving. And about the time they decided 6.30 AM would be a good time to eat, not 7.Kai first throws himself at my bed, clawing and scratching, then my storage box, then my dressing gown is attacked, all the time with one beady eye on me to see if I am responding to this 'get up and feed me!' activity. If that doesn't work, he and Kit start a war over the windowsill...

We're hoping the reduction in stealing the other one's food and less treats will do the slow weight loss we want for Kit. He's 4 going on 5, he needs watching. Kai is 2 going on 3, both were 10 pounds when we did the 'standing on the scales' thing. They're big cats.

just that sometimes foods that are pate are better. Some cats don't like textures..my cats only eat pate and I have to mix HOT water into it and mash with a fork-otherwise they just lick it dry and leave the meat behind.

Adult cats should weigh around: 7-10 pounds

This is what it said on that cat quiz I took. But I guess it would depend on the size and breed of cat as to what it's "normal" weight should be. As for weighing my cats, we have one of those digital bathroom scales. I weigh myself twice, and if I get the same number twice, I weigh each cat, one at a time while holding them, then I subtract that weight from the original weight. It's pretty close to what they weigh at the vets. Not too far off. At the vets they use baby scales, and they are digital too. So they weigh them and I write it down, then I compare the weight that I get when I weigh them, with what the vet said. Most of the time it's pretty close.
Unless our battery in our scales is run down, most of the time our scales are pretty accurate. I've been thinking of getting one of those baby scales too, just to be in sync with my vet.

I want to see this quiz.
Hey lalagimp, actually I did post a link to this quiz on this site. I think I posted it in the cat lounge(?) section. I'll post the quiz here too. It's just a fun quiz I found to see how much people knew about cats. Some of the questions were pretty tricky. But I did fairly well. The first time I got 72% right. So that was good. :-)

You should be able to feel your cat's ribs, but not see its ribs.  There should be a thin layer of muscle/fat in between the ribs and skin.  Your cat should also have a waist when looking at him from above.
Hey Orange and White.

One of my cats Rascal is a very small cat. I think he was the smallest cat in the litter and Shadow was the first cat in the litter. Shadow is way larger than Rascal. He weighs more, and is heavier. But Rascal is still the lightweight of the two. You can just tell the difference when you pick them up. I think their dad was this large black and white Tuxedo cat and their mother was a small Tabby cat. I think Shadow got his size from his dad, and Rascal got his size from his mom. But both are black with some white on their bellies and chest. But they both have this strip on each side of their heads where it looks like they don't have very much hair. I think think the mother had that on her too. They even had some faint stripes in their fur like their mother too. You can only see it when they are in the sunlight. But you can definitely tell that Shadow is the larger of the two.
