Preparing to get cat fixed...

Hello all!

My sweet Eleanor is an indoor eight month cat, and I'm scheduled to get her fixed next week. I'm so nervous, I don't want my baby in any sort of pain. Is there anything anyone can suggest I do to comfort her after the surgery, any tips to make the healing process smoother and anything I should look out for?

  Congrats on your new kitten, Eleanor.  Honestly it's been so long since I've had a cat fixed.  Most of mine are rescues and were already fixed when we adopted them.  However, rest assured that your vet will give you follow-up instructions.  It would be wise to make a list of questions ahead of time so that when you bring Eleanor in you won't forget to ask anything.  Best of luck, please keep us posted on her recovery.

"Smoother," is one of the keywords.  During recovery, try to steer clear of 'fuzzy' fabrics like blankets for a time - at least until the incision has closed sufficiently so that bits of lint can't insinuate themselves and foster infection.  Best home remedy: a low laundry basket (the old-fashioned double-handled wicker sort works smashingly), with a flat pillow at the bottom and a satin or silk pillowcase works very well.  Silk won't pill, and the strength and thread count permit very little "fuzz" which might get into the incision.

If there's nothing about, splurge and buy a set - with an extra pillowcase for Eleanor.

An e-collar is usually not needed at all. If your cat keeps licking at the incision site you may need to put an e-collar on or put a small baby onesie (no need to snap the bottom up like you would for a Human baby. Can just cut the snap part off to allow the tail to move freely and the cat to use the litter box) or small dog t shirt on your cat to prevent her from licking.
