What cat food makes the poop less smelly? :)

Hi everyone,

I have a 4-month old Persian kitten and since I got her I've been feeding her Orijen Cat & Kitten Food. Sometimes I give her some wet food mixed with water if I feel she's not hydrating enough - she seems fine with both.

However, the food makes the smell of her poop unbearable and spreads all over the house in minutes! *Her litter is in a ventilated space, cleaned regularly but still - horrible smell.

Any advice on food? What should I look for?

What should you look for?  A comfortable nose plug.

The reason is because cats need high protein diets, but the more protein the cat eats, the smellier the poops.  So basically you can feed your cat crap or you can feed your cat right and smell his crap.

Um, Febreeze, open window, and when possible, scooping immediately?

Yes, yes the house is well ventilated but sometimes it doesn't help xD

I clean her litter twice a day.

Anyways, was just wondering if there is a better food formula for her....

Has she been dewormed then repeated?

*It takes a while to adjust to new foods if you've

recently changed food. Changing brand of litter can help.

Chicken broth low sodium helps hydrate or tuna juice

diluted with water. Only special treat when feeding tuna - contains mercury

Thanks - she received a pill for deworming when I first got her and now I give her drops - never changed food :)

I use silicate and clean up the poop immediately. I change the  silicate every 4-5 days or more.

No smell. I mean, no noticeable smell. If I get some 1 m to the box -yes, it smells a bit. And the room is forcefully ventilated by a small fan. Even if I do not use the fan, there is no noticeable smell.

I have the same problem. I changed what kind of proteins our cats were getting in their canned food to have more variety and now every time they poop, it stinks up the whole house! My husband is in charge of the litter boxes and does an excellent job keeping them clean but it doesn't help. I'm not sure what to do because one of my cats has become sensitive to chicken so I can't really go back to feeding them their old food.

I feed:

I and Love and You's Rabbit (this is new this month) or

Fancy Feast fish (something from the variety pack 2x a week)

Fancy Feast Turkey & Giblets

Fancy Feast Beef

Weruva's Lambergini

Weruva's Glam & Punk (Lamb & duck)

Natural Balance's Buffalo, Beef & Venison

The Rabbit and Natural Balance are new. Last month I was feeding a pork product but it had peas smooshed in and my cats all hate peas.

Where do you think?
I had a lot of luck with canned and raw foods myself.

I would avoid fancy feast though. It's made by a manufacturer sourcing from menu foods (recall in 2007). Also it smells off to me it almost smells of plastic or rubber. Indy won't even touch it.

That's interesting that your cat won't touch it. Mine love it the best.

Interesting. I assume raw is not a food brand but raw as in fresh haha

My only reservation with raw food was that I might not get all the ingridients she needs quite right. She's still a kitten so I want to make sure she gets all the nutrition she needs to grow up into a healthy happy cat :) A lot of people recommended Orijen so i went with it....

Look into raw. You can buy pre-made to make sure all the proportions are correct for nutrients.

If you are interested in going the raw route, we have an entire sub-forum dedicated to raw feeding:
http://www.thecatsite.com/f/65/raw-home-cooked-cat-food
You will find a lot of resources there to help you. It is more complicated than just opening a can obviously, but like any big change, once you get used to things it will become less of a hassle.
