Leanne is a two month old kitten and she always uses the litter box. At night I always put her in her large cage (contains box bed, litterbox, mini scratch post, cardboard boxes for perching and scratching, and lots of toys.) For the last couple of nights, she's fallen asleep with me in bed, and I haven't put her in her cage. This morning, I woke up to a large poop beside my bed and her scratching the carpet in an attempt to cover it up as she does with litter. Her litterbox was only three feet away (the cage was open). I quickly scolded her and placed her in her litterbox, closing the cage door. Why did she do this? Can anyone explain/prevent this?

Two month old kittens are too small to remember where to go when they really have to go. It sounds like she was asleep and then didn't make it to the box in time. What you can do is to introduce more litter boxes so one is always near. You should also clean the spot with an enzyme cleaner so she doesn't smell it anymore.

Please don't punish her.

I didn't punish her, you misunderstood. I just said "No!" and placed her in the litterbox as a reinforcement.

Hello,
If you never had a feline in your family in the past, your up for a characteristic funny, loveable companion. Hi, my name is Samantha & cats/kittens at one time indoors was 17. Perhaps some suggestions also let me know If they are working.
1) cats are very picky when it comes to the "Potty" Several things can be causing her pickiness. We have one of the characteristics on our side, she's near her area. Some cats would enjoy privacy. It could be the litter is either gray clay gravel ( Cats are spoiled ). It seems mine likes the expensive 30Lb Tidy Cat Scoopable Tidy Action- w/$14.38
I have a question? The kitty places she's choosing are they near the box itself?? Is the box near her food? Is box near sleeping area? Also many new cat owners don't realize cats will TALK to you with body language so work on trying to figure out what she is telling you & talk to her like when your going to feed her make it known.
To be continued ( my cats are expressing "feed us" brb )

Hey Samantha,

Leanne did it again in the same spot even though I thoroughly cleaned it!

Oh well! Yes, her litterbox is near her food and her sleeping area.

What did you clean with? I would also recommend putting another litter box on that spot.

Ok. I'm not able to buy a litter box at this moment but I guess I could move her existing one or something for now.

I'm sorry. If my cats weren't jumping on top of me blocking my screen. I would of continued.
Please move the litter box away from food. Can you remove her from what seems like a nice livable area BUT cats will Not eat where it poops or poop where it eats.
She is trying to teach you but no voice,,The baby is doing something out of the ordinary to get your attention ! 1. If there is adjoining bathroom or place box with only litter box across the room where she eats And sleep. Take Food & water place a mat or towel and face bowels am inch from facing the wall. I am assuming she is sleeping in bed with you? I took in a 3 week old kitten I trained him to use litter boxes, he is my main baby "skittles" there are 3 pet removers work great! Arm & Hammer sprayable plastic bottles Clorox urine & other stains . Please move things immediately also if you want her to follow you they smell oils transfer from your feet. So it's better for him to follow Mama (you). I would put my money if you do these changes she will go back to herself , Pm me & I will help you if you like.
We'll good luck

Your Friend
Samantha
