Hi there,

While vacationing in St. John, USVI i volunteered with their cats and at the end, couldn't say goodbye to this sweet, 10 year old deaf cat that had been there 2 years and no one wanted.  Here she is in the shelter, and she is adjusting nicely in her new home with our other cats.  You can read about the small and wonderful shelter that tries to help so many animals down there and if you're flying to St. Thomas, you can actually help them, even if you don't get to St. John. Details at http://www.thecatsite.com/t/316515/...ed-for-the-animal-care-center-of-st-john-usvi

Here is Marbles, now Mabel.  her eyes are actually a deep green.

Mabel is a cutie pie.  Let me just say, WOW. on vacation and you volunteered at a shelter.  The only interaction I have on vacation is with a bottle of suntan lotion.  You just inspired me to do more when away, so thank you for that.

I would love to hear more about Mabel's adventures and what it's like for you caring for a deaf cat, is it a challenge or is it the same as a hearing cat.  I find it interesting.  Best to you and your lovely Mabel.

Oh, she's lovely. Just look at that face, so full of character. I'm glad to hear she's settling in well at her new home.

How did you get her home with you? I bet that was an adventure.

One of my mum's cats went deaf in her old age. She'd wake up from her nap and start yelling "Hey, people. Where did you all go?" You used to have to knock on the floor so she'd feel the vibrations and look round at you.

Mabel really suits her, she looks a lot like a Mabel.

Congratulations on your new addition.

I was in St Thomas and several islands last year on a cruise.. so many stray cats! I was surprised at how many there were.

Thank you Stephen for helping out.. great to see you around again!

Mabel is adorable and such a lucky girl, finding a home with you.  After two years in a shelter, she will be so happy to finally have a home.  I think it's wonderful you rescued her - she has such a sweet face, it's easy to see how she charmed you!

Mabel is a real sweetie!
Such a beauty!
It made me so sad when I read that no one wanted her.
So happy to hear that she now has a loving forever home with you.
May she enjoy the rest of her life being loved and spoiled, as every cat deserves.

She's beautiful.  A Grande Dame of the first order.  I got all weepy reading the original thread, and again now.  I'm so glad that she has a home at long last.  When I read about shelters doing their best against incredible odds, I am reminded of the song, "Bless the Beasts and the Children."

She has a lot of character!  We got her home via a boat ride, a crazy cab ride, then in the plane with us under the seat, then another cab ride, 10 hours door to door and not a peep from her!  She's doing really well and adjusting to our other cats!

Wow! Now that's a good girl!   I bet because she knew she was going to her forever home.

That's quite a journey you two have gone through, no doubt a beginning to a beautiful fun filled adventure.  Best to you and Mabel.  I hope you post more pictures of her when she gets settled.  Congrats.

Hi Stephen, I was wondering how "The Many Adventures of Mabel, The Island Kitty" were going.

Has she adjusted to the main land and her new home?

Hope all is going well for you all.  Great story, would love to hear more about it.

Hi!

It's going well overall.  Our cats are being very good with her, she is still a little grumpy if they get too close to her but that distance is getting shorter over time so we're helpful that eventually they will all be good friends, but things are at least peaceful after a slow and careful introduction.  Mabel is happy, has become quite playful, purrs a lot and likes attention, and is getting over a minor ear infection. :-)  Thanks for asking and checking in, i'm so used to helping people with their cats that its nice to be on the receiving end now and then :)

@StephenQ

I've been wondering how Mabel is doing since you last gave us an update.  Is her ear infection cleared up?

I'm sure she's settling purrrrrfectly. LOL  Would love to see more pictures of her.

Hope all is well.  This was a great story, would love to hear more.
