I took my male cat Zelda. who is six years old to the vet yesterday because I noticed he was cleaning excessively for the last few days in his genital area. And then he Peed on my floor twice, and I noticed him cleaning his genitals and meowing at the same time. So off to the vet we went. However his bladder was empty. I left them there for seven hours with no luck. So this morning after eating and drinking last night he goes to go in the litter box and pee and nothing comes out. So I worried that he was blocked and rushed him back in. He did P in his carrier but the vet was able to get a urine sample. After looking at his urine he said that there are mixed crystals in his urine but that they're very small. We are waiting on a urine culture to see if he has an infection. The vet told me to keep him on a strictly wet diet and gave me a couple cans of prescription urinary wet food. I have two other cats that I feed dry kibble (Natural Balance) as well as all three share a can of Friskies every day. I have tried so many different kinds of cat food trying to get them to eat something that they like with no success. I'm thinking I need to switch Zeldan to a strictly canned food diet but I just don't know what to give him. Any suggestions for highly tasty food that isn't going to break the bank? I do have three cats so I cant afford to spend $10 a day to feed them...

Hello, I feed canned Special Kitty canned cat food, but strictly the Turkey and Giblet Pate as it has no grains and I get the super value cans at $1 for 22oz. I only feed the Turkey Pate and Giblets, Also this food smells good and its only sold at walmart.

I too have urinary issue prone cats and 3 had blocked on me. Stress is a contributing factor with kitty urinary issues as well.

I buy this exact kind but in the 22oz cans. They do also sell 13oz cans as well but the 22 oz are instore only and its hit or miss, as my store is nearly always cleared out. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Special-K...blets-Dinner-Wet-Cat-Food-13-oz-12pk/42425058

Another thing, if he'll eat it, it would be good for you to add a few teaspoons of water additionally to his food. It helps  keep the bladder happy.

I have 24 colony cats and 6 of my own and none have turned their nose up at this specific flavor. I stick with this flavor because they like it and because the other special kitty flavors have rice flour.

Thank you so much! Do they get tired of the one flavour?

Mine haven't. I've been feeding it for over a yr. Only on holidays or their birthdays do they get canned human tuna as a treat, because he always loved seafood flavored cat food but fish isn't so good for cats.

I don't know if you are in the US.

This might be a stupid question but are there Walmarts in CA?
Yes we have Walmart. I went over theee because it's 5 minutes from my house and they don't have this kind. They have special kitty with Turkey and giblets but it has rice flour in it.

That's strange, is it the pate kind, the smooth kind, without chunks?

How far along on the ingredient list is the rice flour? I've fed cat food with rice, specifically the Purina Friskies kind of turkey and giblets for a over a yr and my cat did well. Any canned food is better than dry food. Dr. Piersons has a list of food and a lot of good information all around at www.catinfo.org

I've used a lot of her info for my kitties.

I agree with the above. Even if it's not the perfect wet food, it's still better than dry because all canned cat foods have high water content which helps prevent urinary crystals.

I'd just buy a bunch of cans of diff food and see what they'll eat. Friskies really isn't the best food. Yes, for your dude with urinary issues its better than kibble, but it's still not the best. I think FF or Sheba is better than Friskies. Have you tried tikicat? or Weruva cats in the kitchen? What about Soulstic from Petco? Those are all winners in my house.

:wavey: I can't help with brands, but I can say that the best wet food for your cat is the one that you can afford and he will happily eat! ;) Don't get too hung up on ingredients for now. Hydration is the most important thing, and any wet food will help enormously with that. You might find this useful too [article="30756"][/article]

I go back and forth with FF and Friskies. My young male had surgery to remove his crystals and the stones. He was a rescue. He was about a year old when it happened. For a few years I bought the kibble prescribed by the vet. That gets expensive. So I changed to Iams and other brands for urinary tract health. Thank goodness he has been fine. I put ice cubes in his water bowl because he plays with them and then cleans his paw drinched in water. He continues to play in his bowl and drinks more. Wet food is given twice a day but he gobbles his cat mate's food. I also mixed his wet food with a little water. Not sure if helpful but you do survive and just have to be creative.

Hi thecatlady3.

You are from Canada? That can be .Small world we live in.
You have been given some great advice.Any canned food honey is better overall as per flushing the bladders of all your kitties.Friskies here in Canada is around 50 cents a can. There is a cat nutrition dept in this group.I believe you can find it on the homepage of this group..Sorry I had the link but flew in cyber.

Anyhow apparent scientific studies of foods etc.Supposed to be a good read.If your baby is showing bacteria make sure they do a sensitivity test to confirm what type of bacteria she has and what antibiotic it takes to kill it.This is actually growing the bacteria, which takes depending on who does it  usually 3 days. Some get results sooner.

Pls get all copies of any tests your kitty has.It will show PH which is huge for crystals.Blood,USG,rods, casts etc.All pertinent even if you do not  understand it.If you want more info on Flutd symptoms & how to prevent them & help all three from coming down with it.As it does get very expensive I know.Pls private message me.OK?

Hugs to the babies.C.
