So Bucky has recently taken a liking to eating his collar, well trying to. Since we've moved (mid June), he's lost one collar and I have no clue where it went. I haven't seen a single trace of it in a week. At first, I thought he was trying to play with the bell... until he tried to rip the bell off. I took the bell off that collar and then it went missing. Now we are on collar #2, which is a Kong collar with a bell.

He's a devious little cat so I had left the bell to keep track of him in a 2 story house. However, he's gotten to where he will turn into a contortionist and twist his neck around to get the bell in his mouth. Bucky will walk around with that bell in his mouth, neck twisted sideways, pulling on his own collar until I tell him to stop. This morning I finally broke down and caught him so I could take the bell off. Now he's laying in the floor in front of me trying to chew on the collar itself.

Has anyone ever had a cat that did this? This just started recently, like maybe 2 weeks ago, and he's had collars on long before that since he was an indoor/outdoor cat at my previous house. Here, he stays indoors but I just haven't bothered taking the collar off as he didn't seem to mind....until now.

Yep. Mogli went through about one collar a week. He'd use his ID tag to pull it off (and chew it), so I got the kind with the info embroidered on the collar. He then commenced snagging the fastener on something like the cat net on the balcony to snap it. That's when I discovered Beastie Bands

He leaves his collar on now. I don't use a bell though. If it annoys me, it must really bother a cat with its far more sensitive hearing.

My Aby used to chew on and pull of his collar as a kitten, too
He had a cute safety collar and could somehow paw at the adjustable part to make the collar looser and then grab the buckle and chew until it unbuckled and the collar came off
I ended up buying a regular non-safety collar and haven't had any issues since. I know many people don't like non-safety collars even for indoor only cats but I've never had a problem with them. My other cat does wear a safety collar and she leaves it alone.

Oh I will have to look into those. The bell doesn't bother me really, but I understand what you're saying. Really I don't have to worry about him getting into as much now so I don't mind him being without the bell. I was honestly worried he was going to pop it off the collar and choke on it. He had a serious hold on that bell all the time, pulling and gnawing at it!

Yes! That is exactly what Bucky does with these safety collars! Somehow he would cram his little feet up there, loosen it up just enough, then bite and gnaw until he broke it loose. So far this Kong collar has withstood his antics, so maybe it'll be the sturdiest of the ones I've purchased.
