I recently took my 1 year old kittens to the vet for their yearly vaccinations. On Tuesday the 2nd they received their combination Distemper and also the rabies. I also bought Advantage Multi but I waited until the 4th to give them that. They now have diarrhea, with no solid to it at all. My male was the first on the 5th in the am. Now my little lady has diarrhea also. Both had normal poops until the diarrhea. There was no in between. It went from normal to liquid. Both still are having issues.

At first I thought it was just my boy having a belly ache, but now with my girl having the same issue I’m concerned. They don’t go outside, and haven’t gotten into anything. So, could it be the vaccination or advantage that got them sick? They are eating and playing as usual, sleeping a little more, but still active when they wake up. Is there anything I can do to help them get back to normal or firm it up? My poor boy is in and out of the litter box quite a bit. It’s funny and sad but he will be playing and then all of a sudden he makes a mad dash for the box. They are long haired so it has been quite a mess.

Also I have recently switched their food but they have been doing great on it for 2 weeks. I don’t think it is that. They went from 100% dry to 90% wet. Would that do it?

Thanks for any suggestions or feedback!

Accordingn to what i just read about Advantage Multi for Cats, it says:

"What are the possible side effects of Advantage Multi Dogs and Cats:
If any of the following serious side effects occur, stop using Advantage Multi and seek emergency veterinary medical attention; an allergic reaction (facial swelling, hives, scratching, sudden onset of diarrhea, vomiting, shock, seizures, pale gums, cold limbs, or coma)"

I got that information from this site:  http://www.1800petmeds.com/Advantage+Multi-prod10945.html

So, if nothing else, I would at least call an emergency Vet and tell them what is going on and see if they think since it's already been a couple of days you can wait until Monday (or maybe it's already Monday where you live?)  or get them down there now.

How are they doing today?  Did you call the emergency vet or your regular vet to report this?

Thanks for your suggestions. I called the emergency and they gave me the usual... we can't really say without seeing them, but if they are eating, drinking, and using their litter box it should be fine to wait until tomorrow (Monday). I will be calling their vet tomorrow morning and keeping a close eye on them until then. Like I said they seem fine as far as eating, playing, and their normal behavior. I will keep you updated after I speak with the Dr. Tomorrow!

Well I took in a stool sample for both my kitties. They have giardia! I don't understand how. They are both indoor only and we have city water. They had a fecal last year after we did all vaccs, antibiotics, and whatever else they were on and there was no other issues with the fecal then. If they were clear then I'm not understanding how they have it now. They said the stress of the vet must have triggered it to flare up and that is why they have diarrhea.  I have to go pickup their medication so hopefully this will help.

Well, I'm thinking maybe that's better than an emergency reaction to the Advantage Multi, which could have been deady, but...WOW!  That's a new one on me.

At least you know what it is and can now begin treatment.

Yes. Definitely better. They put them on Metronidazole for 7 days for the Giardia and also Loperamide to help with the diarrhea. They have been eating, drinking, and playing so hopefully this all works out. I have to get another fecal in 3 weeks to double check but until then I will be worried!

We live in a very busy city between the cities major intersection so going outdoors has never been and will never be an option which is why I was so confused! We live in a New 3rd story apartment building so their aren't many critters or plants for them to get into either. The vet wasn't really sure how they could have come in contact with Giardia so they are thinking it was from when they were kittens and it just wasn't abundant enough to show in the exam.

Either way at least we know what it was and hopefully everything will be clear in 3 weeks and their diarrhea will start to dissipate.  Thank you for the suggestions and concern! I will update in 3 weeks!
