Amazon has an open box heat pad for $28.35 right now.  If you have prime, it's free 2 day shipping.  http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0009YWJRE/?tag=&tag=thecatsite

Here is the description:

The Outdoor Heated Kitty Pad is an essential source of warmth for your kitties or feral cats that spend time outdoors during the chilly fall or spring months, and frigid cold winter months. Its internal thermostat keeps the surface nice and warm even in the coldest of temperatures. Dual thermostats heat the pad to approximately 102 degrees, the ideal temperature for cats (or dogs). Place it in a shed, garage, barn, kitty house or anywhere where your outdoor kitties like to spend time that will remain dry and protected. Includes a free fleece cover to add a soft coziness to the bed, or add an optional K&H Deluxe Fleece Cover (sold separately).

It's made of rugged ABS plastic, measures 12.5” x 18.5” x .5” and has a 5.5 foot steel wrapped cord. Safe and energy efficient, 40 w. Recommended for indoor/outdoor use. MET listed. One year limited warranty.

I have a few of these and they heat so well.  The plastic is hard so soft like the other variety.  Yet I find these to be warmer.  They fit perfectly in the bottom of a rubbermaid or sterlite container.  Great price if you are thinking of getting one.

Thanks for letting us know. I'm going to check into the heating mats for starting seeds too, they are cheaper and sound basically like the same thing! I bet they don't have the wrapped cord though.

That's a good idea.  I think the wrapped cord is only to protect the cord if you have cats that chew cords.  My two couldn't care less about the cords.  I keep them tucked back and wrap them in a towel.  I actually don't like the wrapped cord as it is hard to deal with in the winter.  It gets very stiff.

If you find a large seed mat let us know.  I would love to check out out if the price is right!

I found two good ones on Amazon, a 9x19.5 for $23.01 and a 21" x 10" for  $37.50. well below what a 'pet mat' costs in those sizes, and I wrap them in a towel anyway, so the pad doesn't mean much to me.

Have you ever used one of these for extreme outside use?  I was reading the description and it says it only warms 10-20 degrees above ambient temperature.  That would not be warm enough.

The heat pads I have used heat to 102 or so.

Maybe I am misunderstanding?

The pet pads that I have bought for big bucks say the same thing in the fine print. The seed pads heat continuously like the pet pads, they both have safety features built in, and I know some of the seed heating pads have a thermostat on them, unlike the pet pads. I would most likely start with the seed pad in the house and maybe stick with the pet pad that is made for extreme weather for the outdoors. My house cats spend a LOT of time on theirs in the winter and I go through more for the inside then I do for the out. I'll test these things and get back to everybody.

Thank you.  One of my house cats loves the heated mat too.  I have one that I have been setting outside in one of the feeding stations or on the deck during the day.  My outside boys have been going stir crazy with the cold weather.  When the sun peaks out they like to come sit in the sun.  I stick the heat pad out there so they can get a bit more warmth.  Then at night I bring it inside since they the outside cats will go into their shelter.  One of my inside boys has been found on it each evening.  I have been plugging it in for him and he is so happy.

This same indoor boy used to sleep with my DS who had a heated mattress pad.  The cat loved it and slept with my son each night.  DS went off to college in the fall and I forgot all about the cat sleeping on the heated mattress pad.  Now he is staying warm too!!

I use these too! I have 4 of them for 4 feral cats and they love them! It has been in the single digits here in PA and they still feel quite warm to the touch. When I pick up the kitties or rub their stomach, their belly's feel warm too. It gives me piece of mind to know that they can have a little bit of warmth in these brutal temperatures.
