Why is my cats fur doing this? Glitter or ticking

My cat never had the light colouring in his fur when he was young, it's hard to see without a lot of light or in the perfect fact angle really. He looks a lot lighter compared to when I got him, colour wise. Any idea what this is?

He is a very beautiful brown classic tabby Just like my boy in my avatar pic

The speckly bits are like ticking - in the cat show world we call it brindle As in the coat is heavily brindled
