I adopted my cat Emmy from a shelter I work at just over a month ago. She was on Royal Canin there, so I wanted to keep her on it until she got settled. Now that she totally at ease, I really want to switch her overto something better, that doesnt have any by-products, and preferably grain-free, although at this point I am willing to try something that is only soy, corn and gluten free as long as the rest of the ingredients are high quality. During my research, I settled on Wellness as a brand that I want to switch her over to, the only thing is she isn't crazy about a lot of their flavours of canned food. I've tried a few other flavours of Castor & Pollux and Blue Freedom, and currently have some Natures Variety in the cupboard that we haven't tried yet (fingers crossed).

I keep looking at the Royal Canin ingredients thinking maybe I'll just keep her on it because she loves it, but then I see pork by-product as the very first ingredient, so I really would like to find something else for her!

There is a store by my house that carries Orijin and Innova, so I was thinking of maybe going that route (even though I'm still secretly hoping maybe she will come around to the Wellness canned), but I'm open to any suggestion at this point!

So what brand and flavours of canned food do your kitties always gobble up without question?

Thank you!!

Welcome! I consider it good quality - the Performatrin brand that Pet Valu makes, and they also have Performatrin Ultra. Both formulas are corn/grain/soy/byproduct-free, and unless the flavour is fish, they're fish-free too. The cats love all the flavours I've given, but I don't feed the fish one since I have a BUNCH of Friskies fish flavours piled up. It's pretty affordable compared to Wellness and Nature's Variety, which is a bonus.

I tried Wellness, and as much as I like how it looks, the cats usually turn their noses up to it unless it's mixed with something else. It smells good to me, but I guess it's generally unappealing to them. The beef flavour seemed *slightly* more interesting than the others, but still no victories.

I can always count on my cats to eat Fancy Feast . It is their all time favorite .. They will eat Sheba as well but only certain flavors. ..

Mine go off foods occasionally too, but if l offer the same food maybe once a month, they'll eat it as if they've never seen it before. Mine like change.

Canned foods that they always eat are Wellness Core with the white and brown label (they won't always eat the regular GF Wellness) and Hounds & Gatos rabbit flavour. They love that.

l'm in Ontario too and buy from a Global. Globals are pretty good about ordering in something to try if you suggest it to them.

Mine don't like Wellness either.  Tried and true brands for me are Nutro Natural Choice soft loafs (for my pate lover), Nutro Max Cat (chunky ones only available in the 3 oz cans), anything by Cats in the Kitchen, anything by Soulistic, and Pro Plan chicken & liver entree.  But I'm not that picky when it comes to canned food.  If it's grain free and fairly low carb, I'm good.  By products don't bother me too much.

My cats like change and variety, too. And they also will eat Wellness Core but not Wellness's "regular" grain-free line: they like the Core duck and turkey, and I still feed them an occasional can of kitten food even though they're now fully grown. They love that one.

Among the foods they like best are Weruva Cats in the Kitchen (Fowl Ball generally goes over well but the Chicken Frick a Zee really got lapped up fast yesterday), Nutro Natural Choice (minced chicken, chunky loaf chicken, turkey slices), Hound & Gatos lamb, and Tiki Cat's chicken with egg. They also love Stella & Chewy's food. I think that's their biggest favorite right now.

Wow-I've never heard of these brands of cat-food.  Are they at pet stores?  I've been giving my fella Friskies.  Having him come to us so injured-I kind of just got stuff to get us through; so I'm not certain where Friskies stands on the good/bad list of foods.  Something I had better research!

@braysnaner; Friskies is an okay food. In my mind, it could be a lot better, but it could be a lot worse. It depends what pet stores are around you. Wellness, Nature's Variety, and Nutro I've found readily available at chain stores like Petsmart, but I think Weruva and Hounds & Gatos have a more limited distribution so specialty pet boutiques and pet stores (in Canada, a good one is the one @Andrya mentioned, Global Pet Foods) may carry these. A popular site lots of US customers order from for the prices and free shipping carries Weruva and some other good brands like EVO is Chewy.

My kitty isn't too picky ...he eats it all - currently he's getting Wellness Core, Nutro Natural Choice (Loaf) & 4Health (a Tractor Supply brand) ...Nutro NC does seem to be  his favorite ... I recently purchased a couple cases of Wellness Core through Chewy.Com  ( http://www.chewy.com/ ) ...you can find many many brands there & prices are good - free shipping over $49 plus I got 20% off a first order when I set up atuo-delivery (I think this is an ongoing promotion).  My shipment arrived in 2 days.

I have 7 cats. They all eat Merrick Cowboy Cookout. Merrick chicken pate 5 will eat. 2 that are more picky wont touch it.
They all like Funk in the trunk. It has tuna, they like anything with fish.
Wellness core turkey and duck is one i have fed a couple times, they all seemed to enjoy.

6 of them like NV lamb, the pickiest does not.

Thanks for sharing your experiences! I broke down and gave her some Royal Canin today because she's been scarfing her dry down as she is not fond of her canned options. Since she's currently on some portion control (vet says she needs to lose 4 pounds) I don't want her to have any more dry than necessary! I looked up Weruva online, I like the look of the ingredients. I know in the past my cat has preferred pate, she seems to only lick the gravy off anything chunky, and the Weruva looks like its a chunkier texture, but its worth a try! I'm lucky because there is a Global Pet Food store literally a 2 minute walk from my house, so I'll check it out and see what they have going on.

Also, Merrick cowboy cookout sounds good but I haven't seen it anywhere yet so I'll have to look around. If 7 out of 7 eat it, I'm thinking mine will too!

Natural balance ultra is reasonable and fussy cats really like it, it is pate.

My 2 rarely eat the same thing. But here's a mixed list of tried & trues. Until they aren't anymore. I have 2 very picky eaters.

Wellness pouches

Wellness Divine Duos

Natural Balance pouches

Natural Balance Platefuls Catatouille

Nutro Natural Choice sliced/minced varieties

Soulistic Good Karma (Petco brand)

Soulistic Harvest Sunrise

Weruva Cats in the Kitchen Chicken Frick a Zee

Pride by Instinct Lucky's Lamb

Pride by Instinct Rockstar's Rabbit

Pride by Instinct Daredevil's Duck

Neither one of my 2 girls will touch pates with the exception of the Wellness Divine Duos. Lilith will eat those since they have a topper of minced meat in sauce on them. If yours don't like pates, avoid the Nature's Variety Instinct flavors since they all seem to be pates and the girls do not like them at all regardless of what flavor it is.

Out of my list, only the Soulistic is specific to a certain store. Most, if not all of these foods are available through  www.chewy.com, www.petfooddirect.com  and www.amazon.com

A lot of pet foods are eligible for the Amazon subscribe & save program. If you have 5 or more items in your S&S, you save an additional 20% (they do not all need to be in the same category).  Amazon is also great for things like pet food because you get the free 2 day shipping if you are a Prime member. I think the other 2 have a minimum order amount for free shipping, $49 I think. Amazon is also a great resorce to check reviews on pretty much any product regardless of whether you plan to buy it from them or not. I always check reviews there.

Good luck!

Our cats sound very similar... they have favorites until they don't! But they also love the Natural Balance Catatouille, it's one of their big favorites, though I only serve it to them as an occasional treat. One cat also loves Soulistic's Autumn Bounty, a pouch food that's one of Soulistic's lowest in carbs. The Nutro foods are their bedtime foods because they always eat them up and they're caloric so get them through the night. I want to try some of the Pride foods, though nobody sells them locally (other than rabbit, which I can't bear to feed since I used to have pet rabbits!) so I need to find somewhere I can order only a can or two.

Also, that's good advice about the Nature's Variety Instinct pates. They are the most pate-ish of pates and some are almost a little chalky! Our two will eat them, with some extra water mixed in, but don't love them.

They were eating Fancy Feast and Sheba pates until they decided that they didn't want them anymore and refused to eat them. I wish the Nature's Variety Instinct cans listed that they were pates on them. I have a few cans that I will be giving away because they wouldn't eat if they were starving to death. I even tried adding a topper and they wouldn't touch it. I have to keep their dishes elevated so the dog won't eat their food. I have a small computer desk and a chair set up in the kitchen. They took one look at it, turned their noses up at it, jumped down, gave me a dirty look and left the room in a huff. I offended them.

I learned my lesson there. Sophie did like the Halo Spot's choice shredded one week and the next week refused to eat it. The Spot's Stew was an epic fail. It's PATE. Who calls pate stew? That one got me in trouble, too. I got the "let us know when you find something decent to eat" look.

The Pride by Instinct is one food both will eat. The Lucky's Lamb is the favorite. I find it at Petsmart. Petco does have some flavors but they do not carry the lamb or duck in store. Online only and by the case only. Petsmart has a better variety

Have you tried the Sheba cuts? My cats love them. Others you may want to try:

Eartthborn, Soulistic, Max Cat in the 3 oz cans (5.5 oz cans are pâté), Natural Balance Platefuls (pouches), By Nature stews, Against the Grain, Weuva. All these listed are either shredded or chunky. One of mine doesn't like pâté either....

Yes, it's our Petco that sells the Pride rabbit (shudder!) food. There's a Petsmart a couple towns away... I've been meaning to make an expedition there anyway. Even that's better than buying a case online and getting "that" look from the cats if they don't like it!

My cats love the natural balance catatouille also. They like all natural balance foods best dry and wet it also agrees with their tummies. That is fine with me it is cheaper than some of the others.

NVI canned cat food and dog food is the same so it should be all right for the dog unless there's another reason he can't have it. We started getting the big dog food cans of rabbit for Dandy since it's so expensive. She is really stuck on Fancy Feast though. I would like to find something else she'll eat besides Tiki Cat chicken and Fancy Feast. The NVI is something she eats but not really enthusiastically.

(She's at the vet with urinary problems now.)
