Extra large cat harness?

Hi - does anyone know where I might find an extra large cat harness? Murray is too big for standard cat harnesses (about 15 pounds, and big boned), and I tried a dog harness, but the straps were too wide and rigid, so he could barely walk with it on. And I've heard it's not good to just attach a leash to a collar, like you would with a dog. The only cat harnesses in XL that I found online were from overseas; I'm looking for someplace in the States that might sell them.

Thanks!

Thanks - I'm going to try the walking jacket in the "large" size (says 17 pounds and up, and Murray is only about 15 - but he's so big-boned, I think he will need the large). Hopefully it will be returnable if he doesn't cooperate with the leash-training experiment - it isn't cheap! :-)

You might want to measure him first--they have the adjustable dimensions on the website--there is some overlap, but you'll want to be sure he falls into range of the one you're buying.

Oh, this does bring back memories. Bijou is over 18 pounds and it took me 3 tries of buying useless harnesses before I found a dog harness with the smaller straps at Petsmart for him just as you did Buzby.

Someone needs to make a "Husky kitties" store like the Men's Big and Tall!

I had found an H style that he used for awhile til he learned to wiggle out of it... the roman has worked like a charm though!

I purchased one at Mud Bay Granary that is a nylon jacket-style harness made by "Metpet" for my cat who is just under 18 lbs.  It fits; however, it is not secure if you have a very strong and agile cat.  My cat has wriggled out of it more than once.  It is amazing how they can make themselves seem boneless in a pinch.  If your cat is well-behaved, that harness will definitely fit a 15 pounder.  Hope that helps!

After reading your post and replying, I decided to create my own cat harness.  I discovered one called the "Kitty Holster" but I thought none of the styles suited my cat's personality.  Additionally, I didn't want to wait for the shipment!  So, I am an artist and costumer and had some leftover leather from a Xena costume I made a few years back.  I used the scraps to whip up this "Catiator - Meowximus Aurillius" harness design (based on the movie Gladiator's Maximus Aurillius character.  The hard part was coming up with a pattern which I created using an old Trader Joe's grocery bag.  My cat wasn't thrilled about that part of the process.  That being said, I decided that after not being able to find a pattern for the Kitty Holster anywhere online, I would share some pictures which includes my harness opened up so you can get an idea of the pattern.  Leather is real easy to work with because you don't need a machine, and it really puts the "hand" in hand-made.  Anyway, I challenge you to create your own harness.  It's much more satisfying to create one that fits your own feline's unique personality.  It's a labor of love and a fun weekend project too!

I use a Lupine H-style harness for some of my cats, including my 15b pound kitty.

Lupine makes both dog and cat harnesses, they have a cat harness that fits up to a 20" chest size. This style have been the most secure with my cats, as long as they're tightened properly.

I suppose their "roman" dog harness would fit a cat who's too big for their cat harness, and could be altered to match an H style harness too, but it does have wider straps.

I've found a lot of the vest style harnesses are too easy for them to slip out of. The type like Puppia makes where the neck part is not adjustable are especially easy for some cats to back out of, and it seems like having extra material like a vest does makes them easier for the cats to pull their legs out of the harness. I haven't used the Kitty Holster though.

Hi Xenot and thanks for posting. I created an account as I saw this come up from google.

Could you explain how you came up with the pattern? I've been trying on my own but fitting around the shoulders seems to be a real pain. I'm not sure what angle to use to make for sufficient space for the arm.

I'm currently using denim as it seems rigid enough.

Thanks and your pattern looks too awesome!

I, too, had the exact same problem when looking for a harness for my "big boy".  Frustrated, I visited a locally owned pet store and received some advice that pointed me in the direction of Four Paws Comfort Control harness.

http://www.fourpaws.com/products/comfort-control-harnesses.htm

Granted, it's listed for dogs, but I thought 'why not?' as I had no luck whatsoever finding a cat harness to fit.  All I had to do was measure Sam's girth then decide on a color.

Now if he was only a little more keen on going outside...

I have a regular cat harness for the youngest (who's about 7.5 pounds), but am giving serious thought to getting a Four Paws harness for her, too.

Be careful with the type that doesn't have an adjustable neck, they tend to be easier for cats to squirm out of.
