Cooked Rabbit recipe

I'm interested in a cooked rabbit recipe. I have no idea how to make it balanced if not using a premix.   
  I'm willing to buy boneless ground rabbit and boneless ground rabbit organs (or, if need be, whole rabbit organs) from Hare Today.

  Rabbit is difficult because the USDA database only has an entry for rabbit meat, not organs so I can't say with certainty what the nutritional make up of a rabbit with organs diet would be. Are you willing to use rabbit meat but, say, chicken liver and heart or pork or beef organs? Or you could use rabbit organs but I would use chicken organs in the analysis with the hope the chicken organs would be somewhat close to rabbit. Then, because we don't really know the nutritional make up of rabbit organs we could err on the side of caution with the supplements.

Or I analysis a recipe with just rabbit meat showing what supplements are needed to balance just the meat them you could substitute rabbit organs some some of the meat. Organs generally are highly nutritious so I would think doing that would only help the nutritional profile not hurt it. This approach appeals to me but the other options would probably be OK also.

Thoughts? Anyone???

mschauer, he has to be on a limited protein diet. I'd use chicken hearts and liver as a proxy. It won't be exact, but it will provide a reasonable idea.

OR... go with your instinct, and analyze it with just meat. We already know the organ mix substituted for some of the meat won't take anything to toxic levels (not even close!). So that would be the most conservative route. :nod:

The organ mix from HT is

"Approximate percentages of organs 50% liver, 25% heart and 25% kidney."

They have ground boneless rabbit meat, so combining those two, it's just a question of supplements so there's a good certainty it's balanced.

LOL...sorry to be so difficult! Perhaps a balance would be to feed cooked boneless ground rabbit with premix on some days and the recipe above with organs on other days?

Do you think it's reasonable to substitute the chicken heart and liver in the recipe above with the same amount of Hare Today's ground rabbit organs (which is 50% liver, 25% heart and 25% kidney, as LDG already mentioned)?

I think that would be a good idea. The premix might fill in what the organs don't provide and the organs might fill in what the premix is lacking.

Also, instead of commercial premix, what about making your own vitamin supplement? Maybe just increase the B complex a little for cooked if necessary?

Does the egg get cooked? If not, I thought cats couldn't have raw egg whites?

Okay, so on some days I could follow the Balance It (supplement for cooked diets) recipe for rabbit. It's on their website. This would just be cooked boneless ground rabbit meat and Balance It supplement.

On other days, I could follow the recipe above with rabbit organs. Although, it would be easier if I could just add Balance It to the version with meat and organs, but I'm not sure if this could be figured out properly.

I'd go easy on the organs with BalanceIT. It contains iron which is also abundant in organs. In humans iron supplements can cause stomach upset. Maybe not in cats but ...

  In looking at the original recipe in post #4, I am a little confused when it comes to the supplements. I'm a very literal person, so bear with me. 


Taurine - I have 500 mg taurine capsules at home. So I would need to add 10 of these capsules to the recipe to make 5 g of taurine, correct?

B-Complex 100 - When I did a search for this, there are various brands available. I'm sure they're not all exactly the same. Do I need to worry about the variations of this supplement between brands altering the nutrient analysis?

Spectrum Fish Oil 1000 mg - Okay, this is specific. Am I allowed to use another brand of fish oil? Even if I get another 1000 mg fish oil, the omega breakdown can vary significantly between brands. Thoughts?

Everything else is pretty self explanatory. My final questions is: Can this recipe be halved so that I'm not making so much of it the first time?

B-Complex vitamins are awkward because they contain several different vitamins and each product could have each of them in different quantities. Generally one called B-Complex 100 will have 100 mg of most of the B vitamins it contains. The specific product I used in the analysis is NOW brand. But the product I've been using recently is Jarrow B-Right. It has less of an odor. B Complex vitamins can be kinda stinky.  It contains quite a bit less than 100 mg of the B vitamins but it still  works well in the recipe at 1/2 a capsule. That is, the analysis still comes out fine. So basically any B-Complex is probably fine. Even half of a B-Complex 50 would work. In fact, I probably should have specified less. Half of a B Complex 100 is probably overkill.

The fish oil is primarily for the omega 3 fatty acids to help balance out the omega 6 fatty acids. Modern animal rearing results in meat much higher in omega 6s than omega 3s. An animal raised on a nature diet would have higher omega 3s. In humans we believe it is beneficial to replace some of those omega 3s but it isn't known to matter a bit in cats. Actually the evidence for it being beneficial in humans is pretty shaky. So, any animal based omega 3s are considered beneficial and any fish oil would be fine. A product other than what I used might result in a different omega6/omega3 ratio but we don't really know what ratio is ideal anyway.
