You may remember my posts a couple of months ago about the feral cat we were thinking of relocating to our home (HERE).

Tuesday of this week, we decided to put a 6' x 12' chain link kennel in our backyard so that we would have somewhere to put the cats / kittens we want to relocate to our backyard, as well as somewhere to keep the ones we aren't relocating while they recuperate from spay / neuter.  Wednesday and Thursday of this week, we went to the church and saw only one cat and one kitten.  The other three cats and eight kittens never showed themselves.  We were worried because he have heard that others had trapped the cats there and taken them to the shelter.  We were gutted, so we trapped the kitten, got her spayed and brought her to her new home (where she'll stay until she is older and is big enough to stand up to the adult cats in our neighborhood).   *** BTW, did you know that a 3-month old kitten can escape through a chain link fence??? ***   Luckily, she only ran under the wood pile when she escaped and we re-trapped her and lined the kennel with chicken wire so she can't get out.

This morning we went to the church and ALL THE CATS & KITTENS WERE THERE!

We hope to trap all the kittens over the next few days and keep them in the "holding pen" until next week and can get them all fixed.  Some of them already have homes (yes, the people know they are feral kitties).  We also hope to re-trap the mama cat (Polly) and bring her over to our backyard.  There are a couple of adult cats that we will return to the church.

So .... we need trapping vibes - LOTS of trapping vibes - that we can TNR all these cats & kittens.

Thanks. We trapped four more church kitties this morning - three kittens and an adult we've never seen before. I'll post pics later
We will try to trap (and get fixed) the last three kittens tomorrow, the adult (fluffy black) cat will get fixed tomorrow, and the two orange ones will go to their new home tomorrow. It's a good thing both of us are off work tomorrow.

So, keep those vibes coming ... :vibes:

Thanks for the vibes, everyone!  I contacted one of the local feral rescue groups and found out that they are also feeding and TNR'ing the cats in the colony.  They actually got two of the last three kittens, so that leaves one kitten and one presumed mama cat.  I'm good with just helping with feeding and letting them worry about the TNR since we have a colony in our neighborhood that we manage as well; but keep those vibes coming ....

My husband talked to someone who lives in the apartment complex across the street from where we feed and trap the cats.  He said that some of the people in the apartments hate the cats and that we are feeding them and are threatening to poison the cats or set their dogs on them.  Some kids waiting for the bus have asked us what we are doing, and we've made a point to tell them that we are trapping the cats to get them fixed so they can't have any more babies and cause more of a problem.  Maybe with some education, the apartment complex residents will be less hateful and more responsible (but I doubt it).

I talked to my husband as well as the people from the rescue about gradually moving the feeding station closer to the church building and away from the complex (30 yards or so) to get the cats more out of the sight of the complex residents.  Our priest doesn't mind (the property belongs to our church) as long as we are getting the cats fixed and not adding to the problem.  For some reason, he doesn't like cats running around inside the church.  My husband also mentioned putting a couple of shelters in the area (again, close to the church) for the cats so they don't have to rely so much on the apartment complex.   What do you all think of these two things (moving the feeding station and putting up a shelter)?

ABSOLUTELY - do it. I have successful and easily moved feeding shelters much farther than 30 yards. No problem at all and actually the cats will much appreciate being closer to the church!! You can move the feeding station in two parts - about half way to start. Leave it there for a few days, then move it to the permanent location at the church. I think the is a wonderful, awesome idea and the cats will be very happy. What a kind, loving priest too. :heart3: :hugs: :hugs: :hugs: Great idea about the shelters too. If you can, make a few of them. Not sure you have this link but will post it anyway. Great suggestions for inexpensive winter shelters. http://www.urbancatleague.org/WinterCatShelters

This makes me laugh!  When we asked him if he wanted a kitten, his response was, "NO!  Cats are evil.  They eat your face when you die."    It's really funny that he had this reaction because one of the kittens found its way into the church during a funeral and came up to the priest.  The maintenance man had to 'escort' the kitten outside, and the kitten climbed onto his shoulder while he took him outside. :rub:

Here's a picture of the shelter we made for the ferals in our neighborhood.  We would make something similar for the church cats.
Cat's do have a way to touch people's hearts!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That shelter is just perfect and I am certain that the church kitties would appreciate something like that. :D You could load it up with straw inside to make it nice and cozy warm.

Our ferals love it.  During thewinter around here (the week it snows and is actually cold enough for me to wear a coat), at least 4 of the cats sleep in the shelter.  We use hamster bedding / wood shavings inside the shelter.

I'm off until Saturday, so we'll be trying to catch kitties Tues - Fri mornings.  I really hope we catch a kitty or two (or three, or four).
