What Breed Is Your Cat? Here’s How To Tell!

Do you find yourself looking at your whiskered friend and wondering what breed it might be? Perhaps the dazzling array of colors, coat lengths, and unique body shapes catch your eye, and you can't help but question: Is my cat a purebred or a pedigreed cat?

The intrigue doesn't stop there. Your cat's unique appearance opens the door to a world of possibilities.

In this article, we will guide you through the answers to these questions. We'll explore the characteristics of different breeds, the significance of coat patterns, and how to identify your cat's specific traits.

But identifying your cat's breed isn't just about satisfying curiosity. Understanding your cat's heritage can also offer insights into its health, behavior, and care needs.

Read on, and you'll find answers, surprises, and maybe even a little touch of feline magic – without ever needing to learn complex terminology or genetics.

What Breed Is Your Cat? - The Short Answer

Is Your Cat Pedigreed? The Basic Criteria

You might be wondering if your whiskered friend is a pedigreed cat. The answer is quite simple: If your cat came without official papers, it's not a pedigreed cat.

What does that mean for your furry companion? Let's explore.

No Showtime for Non-Pedigreed Cats

Sadly, without papers, your cat can't enter the breed category in cat shows. It also shouldn't join a breeding program.

The Rare Case of a Lost Purebred

Purebred cats sometimes lose their papers. How? They might end up in a shelter and get adopted by new owners. But don't worry; this situation is rare. Ethical breeders ensure that their cats don't land in shelters.

Identifying the Unidentifiable

So, what if you suspect your cat is a purebred that lost its way? The truth is, without clear identification, like a microchip traced back to the breeder, you can't confirm your cat's pedigreed status. You might be able to guess which breed your cat resembles, but that's all it is—a guess.

Embracing Your Unique Companion

While the quest to identify your cat's breed might be thrilling, the most crucial fact remains: Your whiskered friend is unique and special, regardless of its pedigree. Embrace its individuality, enjoy its companionship, and let the mystery add a dash of excitement to your relationship. After all, sometimes, it's the unanswered questions that make life with a pet so fascinating.

What Marvelous Mixture of Features Is My Cat? A Detailed Guide

Understanding Your Cat's Unique Appearance

Is your cat purebred? Most likely not, but that doesn't mean we can't explore its unique look.

Judging features like facial proportions or body shape is best left to professionals, but coat length, color, and pattern are usually easy enough to tell.

This guide will help you describe your cat's appearance with precise and delightful terms. You'll become an expert in identifying the features that make your pet stand out!

Identifying Hair Length: Longhair or Shorthair?

The journey begins with the coat. Is your cat's hair long or short? This feature alone lets you classify your pet as a Domestic Longhair (DLH) or a Domestic Shorthair (DSH).

Exploring Patterns and Colors: The Kaleidoscope of Beauty

Next, explore the kaleidoscope of patterns and colors.

From our comprehensive list, you can pinpoint the exact shade and pattern of your cat's coat.

You could end up with terms as exquisite as "longhair red tabby and white van" or "shorthair cream and blue tortoiseshell." Quite an exciting task, right?

But Which Breed Does My Cat Resemble?

Here are a few popular cat breeds and some of their more prominent features. Remember, this does not mean your cat is of that breed - only that you might be able to say there’s a resemblance.

Siamese Cats

Short hair, blue eyes, and a colorpoint coat pattern are the traits shared between traditional and modern Siamese cats. Modern Siamese also has uniquely svelte bodies and elongated head.

Could your cat be a Siamese cat?

Persian Cats

A stocky build and a very long coat constitute the typical Persian look, along with large round eyes and a short nose. Modern Persian cats have flat faces, with their nose pushed back. More about Persian Cats.

Could your cat be a Persian cat?

Himalayan Cats

Himalayans, aka Himmies, share the build and coat length of the Persians but have a pointed color pattern. More about Himalayan Cats.

Is your cat a Himalayan?

Maine Coon Cats

Exceptionally large, with long silky yet dense hair and sometimes tufts on the tips of their ears, Maine Coons can come in any color and coat pattern, except for color points. More about Maine Coon cats.

Or could your cat be a Maine Coon?

Russian Blue Cats

The bluish-gray short coat is what this breed is famous for, along with bright green eyes. There are other “blue” cat breeds such as the Korat and the Chartreux, but Russian Blues are probably better known. More about Russian Blue cats.

Is your kitty a Russian Blue lookalike?

The common trait here? These are all breeds that have a prominent feature - be it a certain coat pattern or color, or maybe coat length - that is not very common. That does not mean it doesn't exist among non-pedigreed domestic cats.

You’ll find many “Russian Blue”, “Persian” or “Main Coon” lookalikes in shelters, all in need of a good forever home. These cats are just as beautiful and special as their purebred counterparts. Just please don’t ever breed them just because they’re beautiful!

What breed is my cat - The FAQ

Did we mention that "What breed is my cat?" is one of the most popular questions we get on the cat forums? Here are related questions that we get asked often - and the answers to them.

Is my cat a longhair or shorthair cat?

When you find yourself wondering, "Which breed is my cat most like?", the first thing that you need to determine is whether your cat has long or short hair. This will help you narrow down the breeds that your cat could potentially be.

While this seems like it would be a simple question to answer, many cat owners are unsure as to whether their cat is long-haired or short-haired. There is actually no formal definition for what constitutes "long" in a cat's coat.

Some breeds are clearly long-haired though. Persians are probably the most well-known breed that clearly has a long-haired coat.

Long haired Persian - Persians are clearly longhaired cats, but your cat may be a domestic longhair - read more to see

Ragdolls are also considered long-haired.

Ragdolls are also longhaired cats

Even Maine Coons are counted among the longhaired breeds.

Even Maine Coons are counted among the longhaired breeds

And of course, your cat may be a domestic longhair—of no particular breed.

your cat may be a domestic longhair - of no particular breed

Genetically speaking, only cats that have two copies of the recessive longhair gene will be longhaired cats. A cat that has one copy of the longhair gene and one of the shorthair gene will be shorthaired but still, carry the longhair gene.

Sometimes, a cat has neither a very long nor short coat, as their hair length falls somewhere in the middle.

Some cats are simply medium-haired! They tend to have a thick, bushy undercoat and silky hair, with a long, flowing tail.

Some medium-haired cats also have a longhaired "mane" of hair on their chests. Because a cat must have two copies of the longhair gene to display any form of long coat, these cats are in fact considered part of the longhaired group and they are often known as "semi-longhaired".

Could my shelter cat be a purebred cat?

While purebred shelter cats are rare, they are not unheard of!

There are a few different reasons that a purebred cat could end up in an animal shelter.

Sometimes, a person purchases a purebred cat from a breeder because they like the look of a cat, but they are unaware of the unique needs, personality traits, and behaviors of that specific breed.

They may discover that the cat is not a good fit for their home and take the cat to a shelter.

Other times, backyard breeding facilities—aka kitten mills—are shut down by animal control authorities due to unfit conditions for cats.

Purebred cats and kittens are often taken to shelters. There have also been situations in which cat breeders go through personal trauma (such as a death in the family), have to shut down their business, and give their cats to a shelter.

Last but not least, a purebred cat can get lost and end up in a shelter. These things do happen.

I found a stray cat - can it be a purebred Maine Coon/Siamese/Persian?

It's possible that your stray furry friend is purebred. Like all cats, purebred cats can run away from home, get lost, or otherwise find themselves living outside of a home.

Just like with shelter cats, it's impossible to tell for sure whether your stray is purebred without a DNA test.

If you decide to take in a stray cat, your vet may be able to give you an idea of what breed of cat he or she may be. And of course, you can always ask for our members' opinions here.

Regardless of whether or not you care about the breed of your newly found friend, it's important to take him or her to the vet to check for and treat the many health issues that cats can encounter when they are living outdoors.

How can I tell if a cat for sale is really purebred or not?

If it's important to you that the cat you purchase is purebred, you must purchase your cat through a registered breeder. This will ensure your cat's history and living conditions are up to par.

Registered breeders are also more likely to sell kittens that are neutered/spayed, microchipped, treated for parasites, and have received their first round of vaccinations.

The breeder should provide you with registration paperwork so that you can register your kitten with an official purebred cat organization.

This registration paperwork is often referred to as a "blue slip." You'll also need to submit the cat's pedigree, which will state the names and breeds of the cat's parents, as well as indicate whether or not the cat was sold to be bred.

If you plan on registering your cat so that you can show him or her, it's important that you keep track of every single piece of paperwork involved in the sale—everything from bills to vet records to credit card slips!

My cat mated with a purebred cat - will the kittens look like the father or the mother?

It can be very difficult to predict what the kittens will look like. Guessing the colors and coat patterns may be possible - but that's not necessarily related to the breed of either parent.

The answer to the coat color question depends—among other things—on the sex of the kitten! Male and female kittens' patterns and colors are inherited differently.

Can my cat undergo genetic testing to see which breed she is?

When you're asking yourself, "What breed is my cat?" the next natural question to ask is whether there is a scientific test that can prove your cat's ancestry.

The answer is yes! A variety of companies provide mail-out cat DNA testing which can tell you what breed(s) make up your cat's pedigree. It's easy to take a DNA sample from your cat.

You simply swab the inside of their cheek or cut a small piece of fur (per the DNA test kit's instructions), mail it to the company, and wait for the results! Some reputable companies that provide DNA testing for cats include UC Davis Veterinary Medicine and Base Paws.

What a fantastic post! Maine Coon Known as America's gentle giant is one of the largest domestic and friendliest cat breeds. Maine Coon s a large-hearted cat who loves everyone right from children to other animals. Though he adores long and quiet cuddling time, he wouldn't mind energetic playtime.

I got this kitten from a rescue shelter. The longer I’ve had him, the more I think he is a Turkish Angora (or mix with strong Angora traits). His personality is the sweetest I’ve ever seen. I edited out my face lol. What do you think? The black on his nose is coming off gradually. When I first got him, he looked like he scraped it and had a smudge on his head. They said he was grey when he first came in. I think he may have climbed in a car to get warm. Regardless of breed, he is gorgeous. Just really curious. I have some more pics but could only post one here. Curious what everyone thinks.

Hello! This is our fur baby Sycamore. He is 8 months old. We adopted him in October and he's been an amazing addition to our family! He was listed as a mixed domestic short hair, but I'm wondering if he might have a touch of Russian blue in him. Not only by looks but he has an amazing temperament, definitely loves hanging out with us and has a favorite human (me!), is playful but is also just as happy to sit and snuggle. I run a small home daycare and he is incredible with the kids, even allows the 18 month old to pet him (always supervised by me, kids and cat are not left alone). He is vocal only when he wants something, like a treat or play fetch ith his foam balls! I doubt he's even half RB, but I'm thinking he might have a bit in him.
Looks to be a russian blue mix
ashleyx98 January 4, 2019
To me she looks like she could possibly be a Nebelung cat. According to google, they consider Nebelungs to be the long hair russian blue and have ghost stripes of their tabby ancestors. Which she has, she also has a pointed tail instead of the rounded off. Most Nebelungs have green eyes but can have yellow eyes which she also has. She’s 8-9 months and it will take 2 years for her coat to come all the way in. Whether she’s purebred or a mix of that, she’s beautiful and I love her all the same. I just know that the Nebelung breed is incredibly rare.

I’ve always wondered about my cats breed. I know his mom was tabby, and I always thought he was part Siamese as well. But he is missing some of the lynxpoint features. Similarities: Darker ears, dark ringed tail, beautiful I mean handsome markings on his face, light blue eyes. What differs are his legs are not striped like a lynx point Siamese. His legs and belly are very white. Pink nose and his pads on his paws are both pink and black. Does anyone know what breed/mix my Barry boy is?
Oh also there is a breed of cat actually called a snowshoe cat and it’s a mix between a Siamese and american shorthair

His legs and belly are very white. Pink nose and his pads on his paws are both pink and black. Does anyone know what breed/mix my Barry boy is?
Maybe mixed with a rag doll the markings on his face remind me of what you would see with a rag doll not exactly a color point because color point are darker around The extremities but he looks lighter and has some very nice snowshoes :)

Anyone has idea about my cat breed? KIMMY has thick and silky fur, and smokey color. I thought she is Medium Persian at first, but one of my friend told me that Kimmy looks like persian-maine coon, bcs she has maine coon characters. Here she is...

Hey guys, this is my black cat Stephan that I adopted from my vets office. They named him and he knows his name so I didn't change it, but his nickname is bubba that he also knows lol. I was wondering if he's at least part Bombay because he has all of the characteristics, but he has white on his chest like a tuxedo and some white on his lower stomach. He is long and muscular and very talkative. He is extremely smart. He knows that scratching on the t.v. or window will make me annoyed and get up and get him some wet cat food. He eats so much but he is extremely active and never gets fat. He is 11 pounds and doesn't look it at all. I have another cat that he terrorizes. He is constantly attacking her when he is unhappy and when I won't feed him 2 or 3 cans of cat food at a time. They always have dry food to eat, but he gets picky and won't eat it no matter what brand I try then he will get to where he will eat it. The vet says he's ok and he has all of his shots. I think he is just extremely bored a lot of times and attacks the other cat because she's a moving target. We have bought moving toys for him but he gets bored with how predictable they are. He loves it when we play with him but he wants it 24/7 and never seems to get tired or he will rest and want to get right back up and play again. Any thoughts or tips to help me?
Sounds like my cat Nebby (Nebula) a couple posts down. She likes to do things to push my buttons when I’m on the phone & is in play mode non-stop. She wakes me &her sister up by attacking, trying to get us to play, & is pretty persistent. What I find helpful b/c it seems this is about wanting attention, she is just not asking for attention in a desirable way, is to try to distract her with another toy/activity or separate her from us for a couple mins. When I come back this seems to reset her & she is calm again.I respond to her & give her attention once she is calm. If she continues I give her space as long as she is not being destructive try again. My other cat likes to jump and climb, she has spots she can go when she is tired of playing & nebby is not this seems to also help. Without hiding spots it can be hard to stop you can also try to distract stomp your foot, throw a blanket over them, or give them both toys but it might continue if there’s no way to separate for a little while

I adopted this kitty just wondering if anyone had guesses for what breed she is? she's super friendly, likes water and took like zero time to adjust to her new house and family. she happily plays with our kids, dog and bunny right from the hip.. Also very noisy and doesn't crap in the litter box lol. any help there would be appreciated. she pees in it fine but poos near it not in it. oh and my husband who was skeptical about getting her because he's usually allergic to cats.. not even a sniffle!

Hello everyone! This is my love Scooter. We rescued her from an abusive household where she was hurt. It took us a few years until she stopped being afraid, or react defensively (but never scratching or biting none of that) when we would touch certain sits on her body, so I know she was hurt there repetidely. We have had her 8 years by now and she is the happiest, most loving , loyal, adorable family member, who can hold a conversation with us, has so much personality, like to drink water out of either our glasses or sitting on the edge of the bath tub right out of the faucet. This cat is so intelligent, she watches TV, she, when needs your attention, would sit right next to you, facing you and would tap your leg 4 times in a row and then wait, then if you don’t pay attention to her, she would repeat that until you finally look at her. I mean where in the heck did she learn that? Anyways we were told she is a Manx. She has no tail, not even the rise of the bone. How do I find out if she is a true Manx?

Hey guys I just adopted this super sweet kitten and I’m curious as which breeds are mixed. I’m thinking maybe Russian Blue and a white feline? I’m lacking in knowledge of cat breeds so I’d like to know what you think. I’ll try and post better pictures if needed Edit: I was told she was at least “part” Russian Blue and that she was the only white one in her litter. The others were all grey.

This is my kitten Nebula. Does anyone have any ideas about what breed she could be? She has a tortie coat but seems to have a striped tail and her coat is thick and silky. She likes water, is very curious, follows me around everywhere, is very smart and likes to play catch with her ball just like a dog would do. I have never had a cat quite like her.

Nope. Never mind. After further research, your cat is not a Bengal. He sure is cute!

So I just adopted this 4 month old kitten from a local shelter. They told me she was a domestic short hair, but I don't think they were correct. She has a bushy tail and is pretty fluffy around her face and belly. I think she might be part Siberian, does anyone have any insight? She is quite playful and friendly, stays by my side all day long and I haven't noticed much shedding. In addition, I have friends who have cat allergies but she doesn't seem to bother them. I'm just curious, any insight is appreciated!

Rescued 3 week old kitty, very talkative, playful, loving and energetic. She's white, has two colors on her head and a spot on her side both caramel and dark brown. Round face, small nose, grey eyes (round but a bit longish, very long whiskers. She seems too small for me to tell, but she might be shorthaired as much as medium long haired. My bet is medium. So can anyone tell me what she is? Or what breeds she might be mixed of? Maybe you might be able to see her there on my profile.

Hi, can anyone please tell me what breed my kitten is? (Profile picture) i thought he was a tabby but not too sure, his name is Simba :)
catspaw66 April 16, 2017
Nice picture of Mouse. From the main body types mentioned, there are several sub-types such as Apple-headed and Wedge-headed Siamese. This tends to confuse people further. Very concise and well written article with clear, beautiful pictures. Bravo, Anne.

My cat came from a shelter. He has the best demenour "personality" and he has the unusual white distinctive hair around his neck area, he might be a pedigree.

Someone told me that they thought Reese was not just a DSH because he has a pointy face/nose, instead of rounded. Does that make any difference in the type of cat? I already know he is a white and red tabby, but is he more than just a domesticated short hair??   I don't know how to post a picture here but I posted several pics of Reese in the Pictures and Videos Forum.

Could you help see what my cat is? i think she is a calico but i also think a torqueshell. she is my icon.
reneelouise October 3, 2014
This is a spotted tabby domestic short hair that flicks her tail when she is happy, not just agitated. People see her pic and ask if she is Savannah. Cool. It is totally possible there is a trace of that wild cat gene showing up. But I do not care what she is. She is sweet, beautiful and I love her. That is all that matters.

I think I have a Bombay, but I read here that Bombays will have absolutely no white patches. My boy looks EXACTLY like typical Bombays save a small white patch on the chest and one in front of the hind legs underneath. He's got a stocky build, beautiful yellow-brown-ish eyes, a sleek and shiny black coat, black underpaws by the pads, and a round face with a short muzzle. (See avatar photo.) So any thoughts?

I have no idea what breed my kitten is, he is black and white with short hair and he is a very fine build with a long tail, golden eyes and is very vocal. I got him 2 months ago from the blue cross and they had no papers for him. His mother was a tortoise shell, I think he might be a cross of something.
twckittenmom July 4, 2013
actually just like in dogs cats can be blood tested for breeds. ask you vet about this. also this post hardly has enough breeds on here to even allow anyone to figure out what cat they have, theres no tabby, or tux's, no miaos, even mutt owners still like to atemp to find out what breeds there cat most resembles
hanathewitch June 18, 2013
My kitties are medium length fur, solid black (except for my girl, she's got like 13 white hairs on her chest) Very elegant creatures they are. Black cats forever!

Hi & welcome! I am no expert but thought I would share what my daughter is doing with her cat. Wanda is 8 mo old & recently sustained serious injuries after being attacked in her own fenced back yard by a couple of loose dogs. Her belly was torn open but the intestines had not been punctured. She also had some nerve damage which made her unsteady on her feet & dragging 1 leg. I am happy to say that many surgeries later, OMG very expensive, kitty ICU, water therapy on her wound at home, etc. she is doing great. However, she still has a "body bandage" which cannot get soiled in any way. So when she needs to go to the litter box my daughter or her boyfriend hold her steady while she does her business! I am amazed! I know cats are very private about their business but apparently she knows they are just trying to help her. Don't know if it would work for you guys, but you never know. Good luck with your babies!

For those asking about their cat - please do this in the forums, where you can also attach a picture of your cat. You already have an account with us, so it's just a matter of posting in the right place: http://www.thecatsite.com/f/7/breeders-corner Thank you!

Willow and Jayden has a calico body and a torti tail. What kind so you all think. they both have short hair.
thekittysaver July 8, 2012
Well none of my cats came with papers. However, I rescued my cat Grace. She looks like a Russian Blue; but I guess I can only call her domestic. My other cat Napoleon looks like a flame point siamese. Again, I don't have proof of that so he is a domestic. I love my kitties no matter what their breed is!
thekatsaysmeow July 6, 2012
my cat buster (if you have already seen some of my threads in the forums about him) then you know that he is a very handsome yet confusing kitty! i dont know much about what he is let alone where and how he got his color, but besides the f act hes my baybah baybah boy and i llove him very much confusing cat and all!
mary louise July 4, 2012
Our little Squeaky has all different kinds of fur: long, short, medium, and even curly fur around his underparts; our vets call him a domestic medium hair. We think he may be part Persian with his long fluffy tail and attitude. He's beautiful anyway and he knows it.

SmokePeachAngel: the article only covers some of the more popular breeds. Most cats are actually quite different. Dani, the best place to ask would be on the forums :) The breeders forum is where most of our feline colors and breeds experts hang out: http://www.thecatsite.com/f/7/breeders-corner
