Moderators, Mentors And Advisors – All About TCS Roles

As you frequent the cat forums you may notice that some of our members have special badges next to their username such as this one:

Additional badges are Mentor, Moderator, Site Owner and Veteran.

What do these badges mean? Who are these people and why do they have badges? What should you expect from them, and what shouldn't you expect from them? Here's the full guide!

Moderators (Mod Squad), Mentors and Advisors are all team members. They are all volunteers, site members just like yourself, who have been with us for long enough and agreed to contribute to the community by dedicating their time to performing certain tasks on the site. Veterans are former team members who have stepped down after having been on the team for a while. Site owner is self explanatory.

Forum Helpers

As their name suggests, Forum Helpers help new members to quickly find the information, advice and support they seek. They are longtime members who are familiar with our articles section and forums so when you see them around, don't be shy to ask for help!

Mentors

Mentors are the members you are most likely to meet first when joining the site. When you join the site, one of our mentors sends you a private message welcoming you to the site, suggesting where to start posting and offering his or her help with learning the ropes. Mentors can often be found welcoming new members in the New Cats On The Block forum.

What can mentors do for you?

If you're a new member in need of an answer regarding the site, the forums, how to post, where to find something or anything else you can contact any mentor. The easiest way to do this would be to reply to the mentor who sent you your welcome message, but any other mentor will be happy to help.

Advisors

Advisors are members who help with getting answers to questions about cats. They are assigned to specific forums where they make sure cat questions get answered. They are not professional cat experts but they have some experience with the subject matter.

What can advisors do for you?

Like other forum members, advisors can offer answers based on their own experience. They can also help you find answers by linking to articles on the site or previous threads on the same topic. They routinely scan the forums assigned to them trying to make sure no thread goes unanswered, so there is no need to alert them to threads.

If you see a thread with a cat question hasn't been answered within a day or two, please report that using the flag icon

and we'll handle the rest.

Moderators

Moderators are members who monitor the forum for rule violations. Reports of spam, trolls, flames, inappropriate language or any other issue reach the moderators who then discuss them to decide on which measures to take, if any. While it is usually a single moderator who carries out the actions vis-a-vis a particular member or issue, moderation decisions are a group decision and a single moderator acts on behalf of the Mod Squad. That's why it sometimes takes a while for an issue to be dealt with and while the process takes place, threads or posts may be temporarily removed from the public boards.

What can moderators do for you?

Any complaint about a post, thread or a member should be taken up with a moderator. The fastest and easiest way to do that is by flagging a post: clicking the little flag at the bottom of each post

.

You can also send a private message to one of the moderators to ask about the rules or express your thoughts about anything that goes on here, but if it's urgent, always flag instead.

How Can I Join The Site Team?

We occasionally turn to members and invite them to join the team. We look for members who are over 18, have been very active on the site for at least six months and have no infractions. Existing team members recommend members who meet these criteria and are also friendly, committed to good cat care and cat welfare, have good communication skills and whom they feel may be a good match for one of our team roles. We then approach these members and offer them to join.

This process takes place only when we need new team members, usually mentors or advisors. You may be a wonderful active member whom we all love and respect and may not hear from us simply because there is no need during that particular time for new mentors, advisors or moderators.

Note: We may get commissions for purchases made through links on this page.

How do I write to a moderator re a problem I had today? Apparently one of my posts was deleted for inappropriate content, but when I asked what that was in a new post, that one got deleted as well, so I can't comment on the original one, or possibly explain about it (not knowing the original problem), and can't defend myself (or the content). Can someone please let me know what's going on - I feel like I joined some scary political or ? group, and am being banished - from a forum on cats?

To all of you advisers, helpers, moderators, etc. Well done. This whole site is just wonderful. Well done, all of you. So so many great people here, helping other people and helping cats. @shadowsrescue is phenomenal, i mean, every single word she posts, i'm like, YES! Say it, sister!!! Wow, like a cat angel !! Just so helpful and so smart, just awesome. Right on time, she always has a great idea. I love every word she writes, am learning so much. She is spot on wonderful about cats. :happycat: wonderful. Just wonderful. Everyone here, just so impressive, so glad i found this website. Also @Jcatbird who is like a patron saint of cats, imo. Wow, very humbling to read what all SHE does for our feline friends, wow and wow. Learning so much! and @Norachan , wow, and wow. awesome. We do get inspired and it keeps us all going. and @Furballsmom also so wonderful. Also, so impressed with soooooooooo many others, including @tabbytom and @kittychick are so impressively kind to a person who is worried about her cats, very touching. Not everyone can do that so patiently, but doesn't the world need more kindness. Yes, it does.:petcat: Just loving all of this website, so many nice things and nice people, all in one website. I am sure it is not easy to keep it going at the 5star level it is, must require a lot of work and effort, but, wow, so worth it to the cat world. :clapcat: all right, all right, everybody back to work. :hellocomputer:

when I joined last month Msgreenjeens sent me a message right away to welcome me and help with my post. I didn't know how to add pics etc.. and she was very kind and instrumental to me feeling that this site was very informative, supportive and open to new members. I'm very grateful to her and this site.

I just want to thank you for all your support and I understand that this is a special site. The one I chose from many. People are friendly and I just want to share my feline family if it's okay.

@2Cats4everLoved There are specific forums which are limited to new members. They are the breeders forum and IMO. Both have pinned posts on them which tell you how many posts/time on the site you need to have to post in them. See you there soon!

Hello, This is a great site.  As I read and post, I came across a thread I wanted to post to but didn't have the option because I'm still a newbie, how and when does status change, if at all.  Curious.  Thanks again for this site.  It's chock full of useful information and fun stuff.

@TheyCallMeFive You posted in the right place and I see that an advisor has answered. Hopefully other members will chime in as well.

Could an advisor please help me with my situation? I posted it underneath Behaviour, and I'm not sure if I posted it in the right place, because I'm new here.

Thank you all for the rules and regulations of the CatSite.com

Thank you all for the feedback! @puck Thank you! I'd like to think this comes down to a very strong commitment to cat welfare. We're not a general cat website with a forum, but a community with a commitment towards cat welfare and ethical care for cats. Everyone contributes, whether team members or not. We have our share of complaints too, but the bottom line, as far as I'm concerned, is that we do what we believe is best for the cats.

I had private messages, one from a Mentor at the beginning, just as described here, and one from a Moderator, which I honestly didn't respond to as I know you all must do your job, even when one does not have all the information or facts. I've really enjoyed combing through some of the Advisor and Owner posts that I see on threads to which I'm replying. Sometimes, I would like to ask that a potentially detrimental post be taken down, but rather, have just responded to it with a direct parry and redirect to the correct vein of thought and consideration of a variety of philosophy and human ability. Some parties' portrayal of opinion as fact, as evidence to encourage or dissuade trying a method to help a cat on this site, is amoral or misguided, at best, and in need of truancy/regulating if others follow that "opinionated fact" as truth because it is presented by a long-standing member. I mostly see people not blindly following, rather gleaning from and selecting, the behavioral, medical, or personal advice they read here. That is reassuring in and of itself.   Take the best, and leave the rest. By taking, meaning it should be "taken to your vet" and discussed, or "taken to your rescue/NPO friends" and compared/contrasted with other effective or failed methodology to feed, capture, treat, desensitize, modify, or free rescue or feral cats.   Thanks TCS Team for giving cats and their people such a voice online, without the clogging/trolling I've seen on "bigger n badder" answer sites! Before I found TCS, I would occassionally visit those sites, answer, then tire of the amoral owners/answerers, or popularity contests, and retire from them for months or years. I stuck to my professional networks. But, we "experts" can be boring, when we just fish amongst ourselves. No variety, no challenge, no learning or teaching at a good rate ;] Haven't found a dog site where each dog owner isn't an expert yet... TCS, wanna get on that?!

After reading this article I now know how truly organized this site is.  It really makes me feel good.  I think everyone does a fantastic job.  I joined this site years ago, but haven't been very active.  Hopefully, that will change. :)

Wow! This was really helpful! I kept seeing the titles and was wondering what the difference between each was.   Thank you very much!

Thank you Anne, I wondered what the distinctions were between the titles, and now I know. Appreciate the info.
